TALK
about what makes an
antenna "BETTER"!
This is a 43 foot, high performance 160
thru 10 meter vertical multi-band antenna!
Now - work DX as you never could before with a low horizontal
antenna!
·
Requires a special DX
Engineering 4:1 DXE-UN-43
UNUN with coax feed and your in-shack wide-range tuner - or a DXE-MBV-ATU-1
automatic tuner at the base of the antenna.
·
Massive fiberglass channel insulator - over twice the
tensile and flexural strength of competitive nylon materials, and is superior
for its RF handling characteristics. Never use nylon insulators around
RF!
·
Rugged structural grade type
6063-T832 drawn aluminum radiator - the best alloy for high strength, long
lasting antenna applications.
·
The fast
taper antenna element provides the lowest wind
resistance.
·
All Stainless Steel hardware -
very durable and
attractive
·
Free-standing to 90 mph wind
speeds.
·
Requires a good ground radial
system. 32 radials, 65 feet long are recommended. Fewer radials
will work, but with diminished results.
Includes the antenna element,
mounting plates, Tilt Base, stainless steel hardware and clamps. The
rugged Stainless Steel tilt base has a true fiberglass channel insulator - not a
cheap plastic one!

The use of a customer supplied, high quality, outboard tuner is required for any multi-band trapless vertical antenna system. The tuner should be capable of tuning the wide range of impedances presented by the antenna and coaxial cable at all the operating frequencies. There are a number of outboard automatic antenna tuners available that are capable of tuning this type of high performance vertical antenna system. If this type of tuner is mounted at the base of the antenna, it may be directly connected to the vertical radiator and ground radial system without a balun. In this case, a DXE-FCC050-H05-A Feedline Current Choke may be used in the coaxial line to reduce feedline radiation and resultant noise pickup by the feedline. Our testing of the 43-foot antennas with 150 feet of quality Belden RG-213/U coaxial cable and the MFJ-993B automatic antenna tuner has yielded excellent results at the 100 watt power level.
A 200 watt plug and play package including an antenna-mounted automatic tuner is now available by ordering DXE-MBVE-1-3ATP.
When the tuner is located in your shack and coaxial cable is used to feed the antenna, an optional UNUN - the DXE-UN-43 and DXE-UN-BRKT mounting kit - is required to force equal current to both the vertical radiator and the radial ground system, and allow your tuner to properly adjust the impedance. Tuners of this type generally have a good quality variable roller inductor and at least one large variable capacitor for fine tuning.
Tuners which are built into transceivers lack sufficient impedance tuning range for this type of high performance vertical antenna system.
The actual impedance of the multiband antenna is affected by local conditions, including proximity to structures, other antennas, the number of radials, or personal preference for mounting location. It may be necessary to adjust the top element section slightly longer or shorter, or vary the length of the coaxial cable, if tuning to best SWR is not achieved with your tuner on all bands.
The performance of this versatile, rugged antenna is highly dependent on the ability of your tuner to deliver a low SWR when tuned. Refer to your tuner user's manual for correct tuner operation.

The 43 foot tall vertical is, in essence, a "long wire" being operated against a very good ground radial system. Yes, there are coax losses due to high SWR. That is the compromise that one accepts when gaining the ability to operate over many bands in a very small area. This is a viable option for many hams who have enough yard area for a modest radial field, but who do not have the space or supports available for a traditional dipole for 160 or 80 meters. So, even at reduced efficiency with some loss, with the resulting low angle radiation pattern from the vertical, as compared to a low, back yard dipole at 35 feet, you can have an opportunity to work DX and be functional on all bands. Many hams have these conditions and can take advantage of this approach, as long as they own or obtain a very good tuner with sufficient impedance and power handling range. The benefits of a physically large vertical on the higher bands come in pattern and improved reception. Below is the elevation view of the antenna patterns exhibited by a 43 foot vertical as well as a full sized dipole for 3.5 MHz at a height of 35 feet. Most of the dipole’s energy is going straight up - only to be reflected back to local, close-in stations. This is great for evening rag-chewing but very poor for DX.
Looking at the low angle vertical antenna pattern, it is easy to see that an additional advantage of the use of a vertical, when antennas specific to receiving are not available, is that the high angle response -- which would be responsible for the reception of local QRM and QRN -- would be reduced immensely when working low-angle DX Signals. Hence, a quieter receive situation. As for the very low feedpoint impedances on lower frequency operation, these values are sufficiently rotated by the use of 100 to 200 feet of coaxial cable, to allow a capable tuner to achieve a flat match on all bands. The test system we used for the 43 foot vertical over 32 radials each 65 foot long with the 4:1 balun and 150 feet of RG-213 coax to the tuner. For low power operations, the automatic MFJ model 993B was able to achieve a flat match on all bands. The DX Engineering Current Choke Balun will force the current equal on the antenna and radial system, making the electrically short system do the best it can with the available power. If one were able to use ladder line from the antenna to the balun back at the house, then a 1:1 balun would be recommended, with a short run of coax inside to the wide range tuner. Ultimately, this antenna system would be most efficient with the automatic tuner located at the base of the vertical. The convenience of a Multi-Band Vertical is not intended and can never be a high efficiency antenna system on every band. It is, however, intended to offer a alternative to many hams who might otherwise not be able to operate on all bands. The reports from many customer who are using this system, is that the lack of efficiency on the lowest bands is acceptable when balanced against the excellent result achieved on most of the remaining bands. After all, many types of compromise antennas have be yielding amazing results for decades of ham radio operation, because RF will get there and contacts will be made!
