How to design a Monoband Vertical Antenna

As with any successful project, good planning will help produce a more satisfying result. So where do you start?
First, think about how tall your antenna can be in your everyday use. Obviously, a base antenna can be much taller than a mobile antenna. If you are building an antenna for your vehicle, where do you typically drive that has low clearance? Parking garages, drive through lanes at the bank or fast food restaurant, under pass beneath roads or rail road tracks, certain bridges, and your garage are just some examples of what you need to plan to clear with the antenna. So your overall highest point with the antenna needs to be established before you pick your antenna components.
Second, for your frequency of choice, use the Resonant Frequencies Chart to find combination of mast, resonator, and Hot Rodz that makes up your antenna. You want to go as big as you can within the limit you set in step one. Remember to take into account how high off the ground your mount will be. Finally, customize your antenna! Use two smaller masts with a Quick Disconnect coupler in place of the taller mast for your mobile. Add a radial plate and tilt base for the base station. Go taller for your base station and use guying rope. There are many combinations to fit your needs and your budget.
