MFJ-5008 Power Line Noise Finders aid you in locating noise sources generated by corona discharge and arcing components on the power system. HF and VHF operation can be adversely affected by man-made noise, which makes it hard to hear the weaker stations and adds to your fatigue. Many times the noise is coming from just outside your door, from the power lines! Not all power companies, in this age of financial limitations, will have the necessary equipment or personnel to properly locate noise sources.

MFJ-5008s are acoustic receivers, tuned to the ultrasonic range of 40-kHz, allowing you to hear the ultrasonic noise generated by the corona discharge and arcing connections that generate the power-line static you hear on your radio.

Using an 18 in. diameter plastic dish yields a narrow beam-width that pinpoints noise sources to less than 12 in. at a 50 ft. distance. These units have an effective range of several hundred feet! Targeting holes built into the transducer mount and on the dish are aligned with the beam of the dish, allowing you to pinpoint the noise sources on the utility poles.

Receiving electronics are mounted on the handle for convenient operation. A standard 9-Volt battery (not included) powers the device. The gain of the receiver is such that you can receive noise generated from power line sources several hundred feet away. A 3.5mm headphone jack lets you use any stereo or mono headphones or ear buds.

Not only can you use the MFJ-5008 to find power line noise sources, but you can also listen to a wide range of nature sounds! In the ultrasonic range, bats, birds, and insects can easily be heard. The MFJ-5008s can give you a whole new perspective on the wildlife around you. They can also help locate mechanical noise sources in the ultrasonic range.

Do you suspect that the noise in your receiver originates on the power grid? Order one of these MFJ-5008 Power Line Noise Finders from DX Engineering and go find that noisy connection!

Problem Power Pole Found

DX EngineeringDX Engineering Verified Purchase

MFJ-5008
Used this unit to find two noisy power poles. One was repaired by the local EMC (bad lightning arrestor. Dropped noise on 75 m from +10 db over S-9 to S-2 background. The other was not bad enough to report to EMC , but could hear a top pole insulator arcing slightly.
