DX Engineering RPA-2-PM Receive Preamplifier Plug-in Modules offer the best low noise, receive preamplification available--period. They are optimized for the 300 kHz through 35 MHz frequency range, and were exclusively researched and developed with an advanced push-pull amplifier design that eliminates harmonic distortion, a common problem in many other preamplifiers. A high quiescent current increases their ability to handle strong signals without distortion or overload. DXE-RPA-2-PM plug-in modules are directly compatible only with DX Engineering NCC-2 Receive Antenna Phasing Systems and DXE-RTR-2 Modular Receive-Transmit Interfaces.

These modules are not designed to be connected to a transmitting RF feedline. They are intended for use with DXE-NCC-2 Receive Antenna Phasing Systems or may be used in conjunction with the DXE-RTR-2 Modular Receive-Transmit Interfaces for receiver front-end enhancement and operations with transceivers and transmitting antennas.

RPA-2 Receive Preamplifier Plug-in Modules are high performance devices that are switched on or off with dedicated switches in the units they are installed. Therefore, those devices would require well filtered and regulated DC power with maximum performance at 12 to 18 Vdc input. Do not use a cheap wall transformer for the units that contain these preamplifier modules.

Well designed and excellent performer

DXE-RPA-2-PM
A good preamp is necessary for low output RX antennas. My homebrew terminated loop array has about -30 dBm output on 160m, which is too low (in my setup) to hear anything but the strongest signals on the band. With the approx. +16 dB gain of this preamp, I can now hear (and see on the spectrum scope) band noise, and, more importantly, weak signals. My loop array really comes to life with a good preamp. Prior to this, I was using a homebrew preamp, and although it performed well, it recently developed a problem. Not having the time to debug it, I went the easy route and got this unit. Installation was quick, easy, and well thought out. A true "no brainer" that didn't cramp the budget.

I initially purchased one module. After using it for a while I realized the benefit of having it. I like the option of turning it on or off...as required. The preamp use really makes the NCC-2 even better! I use the NCC-2 only in the receive function with my Radio..using the radio's receive loop. When you purchase the NCC-2 you should seriously consider one or two of these units.

While I haven't learned best how to use the NCC-2 at this point, I can say having the preamp available to switch in/out while selecting the needed parameters for the NCC-2 to work its magic is essential; I have two in my NCC-2. The DXE-RPA-2-PM is a very quiet and clean pre, I am happy to have it in the Phasing controller. I have a Hi-Z triangular and a HI-Z 8 element array which are connected to the NCC-2. Each of these hears the signal a bit differently than the other; when the signal is weak to start with, having the pre available to boost the signal in the weaker array helps me find the optimum phase/balance point. I consider the DXE-RPA-2-PM a valuable asset to the NCC-2 Phase controller and it an essential addition to the unit.
