Overview
OptiBeam OB4030 Four-Element 40 and 30 Meter Beam
OptiBeam OB4030 Four-Element 40 and 30 Meter Beam — a compact, highly efficient HF directional antenna for the 7 MHz and 10.1 MHz amateur radio bands. Developed and optimized using computer-aided design tools, the OB4030 was carefully fine-tuned with extensive real-world testing. Within a practical size, true directional performance on two demanding low bands is here.
At the heart of the OB4030 are two direct-feed driven elements connected with square-tube phasing lines, complemented by one dedicated reflector for each band. A key “no- traps” feature of the OB4030 is the use of OptiBeam’s high-Q, low-loss loading coils, specially placed to shorten the elements with minimal loss, avoiding the typical drawbacks of trap-based designs. The longer 40 meter elements are trussed, which contributes to mechanical stability. The combination of an innovative feeding system, special element arrangement, and high-quality coils results in high efficiency, practical operating bandwidth (in terms of gain, radiation pattern, and low SWR), and maximum RF power handling of 5kW. The antenna is designed for a single 50 ohm coax and includes a specialized balun with an SO-239 connector.
Electrically, the OB4030 provides an average gain of about 3.6 dBd on 40 m and 3.9 dBd on 30 m, with front-to-back ratios of approximately 15 dB (40 m) and 22 dB (30 m). For 40 meters, different tuning options are available depending on operating preference with physical settings for either 7.0-7.2 MHz CW/Low Phone or 7.1 to 7.3 MHz Phone only. In practice, the antenna is typically operated across the main 40 meter band segments without a tuner, and the 30 meter band (10.100 to 10.150 MHz) is well covered.
Mechanically, the OB4030 is a serious low-band beam built on a sturdy 3.15 × 3.15 in (80 × 80 mm) boom with an approx. length of 18.37 ft. (5.60 m), turning radius approx. 25.59 ft. (7.80 m), maximum element length approx. 47.83 ft. (14.58 m), and weight is about 110 lbs. (50 kg). The wind load at 80.8 mph (130 km/h) is specified at about 134.9 lbf (600 N) with a 7.97 sq. ft. (0.74 m²) wind area. A solid support structure (mast, rotor, thrust bearing) is therefore important, but in return the operator gains an antenna that delivers clearly improved directivity, better noise and interference rejection, and noticeably more “punch” in DX situations on 40 and 30 meters than typical dipoles or verticals.
In short, the OptiBeam OB4030 is a no-compromise directional antenna for the 40 and 30 meter bands, combining a well-thought-out electrical design, low-loss multiband implementation without traps, high mechanical stability, and a clear focus on DX and contest performance.
OptiBeam antenna technology has achieved directional antennas with extraordinary electrical properties, including the highest efficiency, optimum band coverage, nearly constant gain and unchanging radiation pattern across the band, and low SWR. These antennas maintain consistent electrical characteristics under all weather-conditions and include a high power balun with UHF female connector for your 50 Ohm coaxial cable. OptiBeam Antennas are distinguished by their advanced mechanical qualities. Specially configured, stable and properly shaped element holders, robust square and round booms with effective and very solidly-built element transitions are OptiBeam exclusives. They provide advanced physical properties, including proper balance and the highest stability of the entire system. Elements are perfectly aligned and secured against torsion with minimal sag for a visually pleasing appearance.
OptiBeam antennas are made for those who understand the true value of investing in proven electrical performance and unequalled mechanical quality for the ultimate in reliability. They are built to withstand the harshest conditions using the very best materials, including high quality aluminum alloys, UV stable synthetic parts and stainless steel hardware. OptiBeam antennas are designed to be easier to build than others, arriving in subassemblies with every part carefully sorted, clearly labeled, and extremely well packed for worry-free shipment and straightforward installation.
In 2025, the OptiBeam brand of products was exclusively acquired by WiMo Antennen und Elektronik GmbH. The OptiBeam portfolio is now produced by WiMo and integrated into its product offering. With this acquisition, WiMo will integrate the technical expertise and know-how gained from OptiBeam's many years of experience in antenna technology and will provide new impetus with its extensive service and sales network. The primary goal is to successfully continue OptiBeam's antennas, ensure long-term customer service and spare parts availability, and leverage development potential.
For enthusiastic operators of all pursuits, OptiBeam provides the advantage of pure performance. Proven in the field and confirmed by the most demanding hams around the world – choose OptiBeam for your station.
