War Diaries, A Radio Amateur in Kyiv

"War Diaries, A Radio Amateur in Kyiv" by Volodymyr Gurtovy, US7IGN is a diary of the first six months of the conflict from the perspective of a Amateur Radio operator trying to live a 'normal' life in extraordinary times.
Written in Volodymyr's own unedited words, you will find the author listening to ham radio around the world and not being limited to local TV or internet for information. Even though he lost his job as an attorney due to the war, he continues with his amateur radio activities. For instance, he repairs filters in his friend's Yaesu FT-857, all the while noticing a local repeater being handed over to local defense. Amidst the chaos of rockets falling and the loss of essential utilities like power and water, Volodymyr still talks about his Icom IC-706MK2G and his deep passion for Amateur Radio. Within these turbulent times, his story encapsulates not only the impact of the war on himself but also on Kyiv and the broader Ukraine.

Intertwined with the broader narrative are his personal struggles, such as the poignant absence of his wife on her birthday after 22 years of celebrating together. She had sought refuge in Poland with their children for safety reasons. Volodymyr also shares heartwarming accounts of global radio amateurs rallying to assist, like a compassionate Polish radio amateur who found employment for a friend's daughter and is actively helping his wife. Amidst the hardships, there are moments of pure joy, like the reunion with his wife, and the simple pleasures of discovering an old radio that he can restore.

Featured on a BBC 'Short Cuts' podcast that explores radio's role during the conflict, Volodymyr's identity as a dedicated Amateur Radio operator remains unwavering. "War Diaries" offers a unique glimpse into the life of a radio enthusiast amidst the chaos of a war zone, making it an inspiring and thought-provoking read for all.
