DX Engineering Maxi-Core® 20 Baluns and Feedline Chokes

The present-day DX Engineering was launched in the year 2000. To celebrate our 20th Anniversary in the year 2020 we have developed a new line of Baluns and Feedline Chokes. Introducing DX Engineering "Maxi-Core® 20" Baluns and Feedline Chokes. They reduce or eliminate currents on the outside of your feedline allowing you to hear and to be heard much better. They keep more RFI/BCI out of your antenna and receiver and transfer more of your transmitted signal to the antenna for higher efficiency, the best antenna pattern and maximum performance. Signaling a new era of RF performance across the 1.8 to 54 MHz frequency range, DX Engineering Maxi-Core® 20 Baluns and Feedline Chokes handle full-legal-power-plus and provide higher common mode impedance (CMI) across a greater frequency range than competing models and even previous DX Engineering and Comtek models. Years of R&D coupled with major advancements in test equipment and techniques combined with custom ferrite materials have allowed our engineering team to design the DX Engineering Maxi-Core® 20 Baluns and Feedline Chokes. Maxi-Core® 20 Baluns and Chokes have high CMI across the AM Broadcast band and the HF/6M spectrum, which is essential to provide sufficient suppression of unwanted transmitted and received RFI/BCI current on the feedline shield exterior. Hear and be heard with DXE Maxi-Core® 20 Baluns and Feedline Chokes. Choose superior performance from these models: * DXE-MC20-1-1 Maxi-Core® 20 - 1:1 Current Choke Balun - For all HF-6m balanced antennas with a 50 ohm feedpoint, including resonant dipoles, loops, Yagis, beams, etc. * DXE-MC20-FC Maxi-Core® 20 - 1:1 Feedline Choke – This high CMI line isolator is perfect for use in line on 50 ohm coaxial feedlines, at the antenna, tower or shack end of the feedline. * DXE-MC20-1-1T Maxi-Core® 20 - 1:1 Current Choke Balun – This 1:1 "T" model is for force feeding antennas with a tuner. Use it at the end of ladder line of any impedance or mounted on a coax fed non-resonant antenna. This model tolerates operation at high SWR on non-resonant multi-band antennas. * DXE-MC20-C4-1 Maxi-Core® 20 - 4:1 Current Choke Balun is for use on antennas with a 200 ohm feedpoint and at the end of any impedance ladder line, especially on antenna systems with higher impedance. DX Engineering TWIG QRP 9:1 UNUNs

The DXE-TWIG-9-1 QRP UNUN (Unbalanced-to-Unbalanced transformer) matches a high-impedance, non-resonant end-fed/random wire antenna (33 to 84 feet long) to the 50-ohm unbalanced load required by amateur radio transceivers. The DXE TWIG-9-1 covers 1.8–30 MHz and is ideal for portable (QRP) or HOA-restricted antennas. The connector on the DXE-TWIG-9-1 is a BNC female to mate with the recommended 35 to 50 feet of coax cable, which is used as the counterpoise. In some cases, an external wide range tuner may be needed. This UNUN may not provide a perfect 1:1 SWR on all bands without an additional tuner and may experience heating at higher power due to impedance mismatches. Typically, 9:1 UNUNs are used for: • Random Wire Antenna: Long wires of specific non-resonant lengths (e.g., 29, 35.5, 41, or 71 feet) designed to avoid an electrical half-wave, or multiple of a half-wave, on any amateur band. • End-Fed Long Wire: General-purpose long wire used for wideband receiving or multiband transmitting where an antenna tuner is available. • Inverted "L" or Sloper Configuration: When these are fed as non-resonant wires rather than resonant half-wave radiators. Tips on How to Use the 9:1 QRP UNUN as a Random Wire Antenna 1. Select a "Random" Length: Do not use resonant half-wave lengths. Popular lengths that avoid resonance on amateur bands include e.g., 29, 35.5, 41, or 71 feet. 2. Connect the Antenna Wire: Attach your long wire to the element wire terminal of the UNUN. 3. Use an Antenna Tuner: Because a random wire is never perfectly resonant, you may have to use an internal or external antenna tuner to achieve a low SWR for your transceiver. 4. Placement: Mount the UNUN near the ground or on a short support and run the element wire as high and clear of obstacles as possible. The antenna shown in this manual was tested using the optional 24 or 26 AWG wire such as CEW-VIZ24-YEL100 stranded copper, PVC insulated, high visibility yellow antenna wire. The coax cable (with BNC connectors) is recommended to be 35 to 50 feet in length since the coaxial cable shield is used as the counterpoise. The antenna can be installed in different configurations. Wire lengths will vary depending on the installation and antenna design chosen. This is a low power (QRP) antenna system impedance matching UNUN which handles 25 Watts on SSB, 10 Watts on CW and 5 Watts on digital mode when the antenna SWR is less than 2:1 without the use of an antenna tuner.

DX Engineering Balun Wiring Kits

DX Engineering Balun Wiring Kits are just the right parts for permanently connecting a DX Engineering Maxi-Core® 20 Balun or a legacy Comtek balun to practically any beam, Yagi, Log Periodic or rotatable dipole with stud terminals on its driven element. This wiring kit is not a bracket. This is 8 AWG tinned solid copper wire, 2 ft., and an assortment of tinned solder ring terminals to electrically connect a #10 or 1/4 inch terminal stud balun to either size two stud balanced feedpoint on antennas of several types. Wire a balun to an antenna feedpoint with the DX Engineering Balun Wiring Kits. DX Engineering Balun Wiring Kits include: - Two feet, 8-Gauge Tinned Solid-Copper Bus Wire - Four each, Ring terminal, solder, for #10 stud - Four each, Ring terminal, solder, for 1/4 in. stud - Two each, Star washers, 1/4 in. - Two each, Nyloc hex nuts. 1/4 in. for 1/4-20 balun studs Instructions for installation: 1. Determine the separated routing of the minimal wire length needed for each balun terminal to antenna terminal connection with drip loops (see 2.), no greater than 12 inches each, from the securely mounted balun to antenna feedpoint. Wires must be separated by 1/2 to 1 inch from antenna metal parts and each other. 2. Include enough wire length for a small drip loop, a downward "U" shape in the wire, to prevent rain water from running straight down into either connection. This drip loop also provides wire strain and vibration relief. 3. Cut the tinned copper wire in half and trim excess to make the two wire lengths, preferably identical. 4. Select the terminals that match the balun and the antenna feedpoint. 5. Solder the tinned ring terminals onto the tinned wire. 6. Install each completed wire assembly with the appropriate size Nyloc nut and star washer along with the hardware supplied with the balun. Attach the other end with hardware supplied with the antenna Use an open end wrench on the balun stud mount nut when tightening Nyloc nuts, and then the wing nuts, to prevent stud rotation and possible internal damage to the balun. NOTE: This 8 AWG tinned copper wire fits into the supplied ring terminals even though both the #10 and the 1/4 in. ring terminal terminals are marked 12-10 (AWG). Soldering these ring terminals onto this wire is required for a permanent connection. Only crimping will produce an insufficient connection. These balun wiring kits may be used on many manufacturers' stud terminal baluns.

DX Engineering Bead Choke Standoff Kits

DX Engineering Bead Choke Standoff Kits bring a practical solution to a serious problem when ferrite chokes are placed directly onto the metal boom at the feedpoint of beam antennas. A number of Amateur Radio operators and antenna engineers have known for years about the superior choking function of many ferrite toroids beads placed directly on the coaxial cable, as compared to standard feedpoint baluns. A more recent revelation is that the proximity of ferrite beads on coax taped to the aluminum boom of the antenna drastically reduces their effectiveness. DX Engineering Bead Choke Standoff Kits are mounting systems, made of fiberglass or acetyl standoff rods (color varies), PVC carriers and stainless steel hardware, available in four versions. Two sizes of PVC cradle tubes handle two different types of RF bead chokes; 3/4 inch outside diameter (OD) ferrite beads on RG-400 size cable, and 1 inch OD ferrite beads on RG-213 size 0.405 in. coax cable. Each are offered with two different boom size clamps, 2 inch OD and 3 inch OD. Bead Choke Standoff Kits simply hold an RF bead choke and feedline 4 inches away from the metal beam antenna boom (or 4 inches away from the metal mast for a dipole). They maintain the optimal choking performance of ferrite beads on coax. Using DX Engineering Bead Choke Standoff Kits, ferrite bead chokes function at peak performance for these key results: • Prevent feedline radiation of RF • Preserve current balance for proper beam antenna pattern • Prevent feedline shield exterior collected noise and signals from entering the antenna and interior of the feedline, resulting in lower noise floor and enhanced reception The absolute superiority of RF chokes made of many beads on the feedline, over the traditional enclosure balun, is becoming better understood in Amateur Radio. They achieve the best possible RF isolation of the feedline from the antenna and provide completely balanced currents at the feedpoint. Plus, they provide quieter reception with reduction of common-mode noise. Keeping Bead RF Chokes away from metal preserves the optimal function of this method of antenna feedpoint current balance and isolation. This mechanical requirement is simple and practical with DX Engineering Bead Choke Standoff Kits.

DX Engineering Dual Impedance Antenna Transformers are dual ratio UNUN (unbalanced to unbalanced line) transformers. They're great for coupling your 50 ohm coax to an antenna with a feed point impedance of either 25 or 12.5 ohms, typically found at HF mobile antennas. DX Engineering Dual Impedance Antenna Transformers are ideal for antennas that have been enhanced with a Hot Rodz capacity hat. These transformers are housed in an aluminum enclosure and use silver plated PTFE SO-239 connectors. Many mobile HF antennas are naturally between 10 ohms and 36 ohms at resonance. With 10 ohms at a 50 ohm feed point the resulting SWR is 5:1! Likewise, 36 ohms yields a 1.4:1 SWR. Matching at 1.4:1 isn't too bad, but 5:1 is definitely an issue. DX Engineering MM-1 Dual Impedance Antenna Transformers are ideal for adjusting the impedance mismatch in your HF mobile! When the natural resonant impedance of the antenna is at 30 ohms or below, the MM-1 mobile unun can provide the needed match. With a 50 ohm input, it provides a 25 ohm port and a 12.5 ohm port to facilitate mobile HF matching. Let's say that your antenna analyzer indicates a resonant antenna impedance of 22 ohms. Your SWR without an MM-1 would be 50/22 or 2.27:1. That's enough to cause considerable power rollback in most modern HF rigs. Using the MM-1 25 ohm port, your SWR would be 25/22, or 1.14:1. That's a very significant improvement! Many hams are using antenna analyzers to adjust mobile HF antennas. When a mismatch is indicated at resonance, a DX Engineering MM-1 Unun can solve the problem! Power handling capability depends on the match: * Using the 25 ohm to 50 ohm port, with SWR below 2:1 on the 50 ohm side, -- 750 watts PEP * Using the 12.5 ohm to 50 ohm port, with SWR below 2:1 on the 50 ohm side, -- 500 watts PEP Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. Antenna analyzers are becoming more common. Buy or borrow one to check the impedance of your mobile antennas. Then get DX Engineering Dual Impedance Antenna Transformers to get the best match and highest efficiency you can!

DX Engineering Balun and Feedline Current Choke Mounting Kits

DX Engineering Balun and Feedline Current Choke Mounting Kits allow you to mount a legacy "metal case" DX Engineering balun or feedline current choke at the base of any vertical antenna. This original mounting plate is not drilled for the Maxi-Core 20 Baluns and Feedline Chokes released in February 2020. Please see DXE-MC20K-BRKT to mount the plastic NEMA box models. For the older metal case models, this polymer mounting plate is isolated from the rest of the vertical ground system for best performance and decoupling. The mounting brackets were designed to utilize DX Engineering's V-bolt DXE-CAVS-1P saddle clamps, to mount the bracket onto a 1/2 to 1-3/4 in. ground pipe which mounts the balun or choke horizontally. Also available are the heavy duty DXE-CAVS-11P for 1/2 to 1-3/4 in. aluminum pipe and DXE-SSVC-2P for 1 to 2 in. steel pipe. V-bolt saddle clamps are not included and will need to be purchased separately if you choose to mount your bracket to a ground pipe. If you are mounting to a 4x4 or 6x6 wooden post, then no clamps are necessary--simply use 2 suitable wood screws. These kits work with any DX Engineering balun or choke with a formed-aluminum enclosure. Each kit includes a polymer mounting plate, aluminum adapter brackets, and stainless steel mounting hardware. Mounting clamps are sold separately. Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. This is the legacy DX Engineering Balun and Feedline Current Choke Mounting Kits for the metal case baluns and feedline current chokes.
