DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems

DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems are a convenient way to match the feed-point of a low-impedance Yagi design to 50 ohms. Then a 1:1 balun fed with 50-ohm coaxial cable may be used for optimal beam antenna performance and cancellation of RFI-causing common mode current. The DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems are balanced and easy to tune. They feature an upgraded electrical and mechanical design and are easily installed and tuned in as little as 10 minutes. They have enough capacity for almost any HF through 6 meter high performance Yagi design. Depending on your Yagi design, they include all of the hardware items that you need to match your Yagi antenna to a 50 ohm feed line -- without the need for drilling holes. If your Yagi does not have a split driven element (insulated from the boom), you will need to add the proper-size DX Engineering Insulated Boom-to-Element Bracket and DX Engineering Boom-to-Element Bracket Hardware Kit. Depending on the driven element diameter, you may also need DX Engineering Element Adapters. Different models cover most Yagi boom sizes and they are easily installed on the boom and fastened to the Yagi's split driven element with clamps. These same clamps may also be used for the balanced connections to the balun that handles the unbalanced coaxial cable. Hairpin Matching System Background: Many directly-fed Yagi antenna designs for HF and 50 MHz that are optimized for the best gain and front-to-back performance have feed-point impedances of approximately 20 to 25 Ohms, at resonance. Obviously, this will not allow a direct connection to a 50-ohm feedline without a serious mismatch (2:1 or more). There are various ways to match the driven element to the feed-line successfully; Gamma Match, T-Match, and the Hairpin (aka Beta Match) are favorites. The Gamma match is an outdated, unbalanced system that typically distorts the antenna radiation pattern. The T-match is basically two Gamma Match systems on either side of the boom, which may correct the imbalance, but is a mechanical nightmare and is difficult to tune correctly. In a superior-balanced Yagi feed system, the driven element must be insulated from the boom and it must be split at the boom so that the driven element halves are also insulated from each other, like a dipole. A balanced Yagi can make use of a balun for balanced distribution of RF currents and a proper, predictable radiation pattern. While the hairpin has been popular with radio operators for years, DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems improve on the classic design by using rods that are parallel to the boom. You can quickly match your Yagi antenna by repositioning the boom clamp and shorting bar along the boom and hairpin rods, so the antenna is easier to adjust for minimum SWR than conventional wire-loop hairpins. DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems also add rigidity, offer better protection against ice and wind, and add a professional appearance. Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. Improve your Yagi feed-point matching with DX Engineering Yagi Antenna Hairpin Matching Systems and accessories!

DX Engineering Flanged Feedpoint Connectors

DX Engineering Flanged Feedpoint Connectors provide a direct transition from coaxial cable to feedpoint for Yagi, Loop Fed Arrays (LFA), Rotatable Dipoles and other antennas that do not have a coaxial connector. The worry of failed weatherproofing at the end of a stripped coax is eliminated for the 50 ohm beam or loop antenna feedpoint with stud terminals. Flanged Feedpoint Connectors allow direct connection of a PL-259 or N male terminated coaxial cable. Only this Flanged version (FFPC) can be mounted using the optional bracket, Flanged Feedpoint Connector Mount (FFPM) and an optional studded band clamp or other clamp of choice. Two connector types are available in three versions: DXE-FFPC-SO239ZD UHF Female with 11 inch leads and color-coded heat shrink DXE-FFPC-SO239 UHF Female with 4 inch leads and color-coded heat shrink DXE-FFPC-N Type N with 4 inch leads and color-coded heat shrink Each Flanged Feedpoint Connector (FFPC) features silver-soldered solid tinned-copper 12 AWG wire leads to the silver-plated connector, which is epoxy potted into a plastic housing, 1.573 inch square and 0.787 inch deep, for a weather-sealed direct feedpoint connection. Each lead has color-coded heat shrink; Red is Center and Black is Shield. Additional weatherproofing should be applied to the male-female connector junction, as recommended. DX Engineering Flanged Feedpoint Connectors two wire leads are about 4 in. each, or 11 in. each for the ZD version. A longer length of wire can be soldered to these tinned wires, if required, but keep in mind that increasing connection spacing drives up feedpoint impedance, which could increase the possibility of mismatch on an antenna that has a 50 ohm feedpoint. Flanged Feedpoint Connectors are ideal for phased antenna pairs or multiples, on which a coaxial cable ferrite RF bead choke is desired at the feedpoint, in place of a traditional enclosure balun. The top performing 40-bead DXE-FBC Ferrite Bead Choke fits on 0.405 in. diameter coax cable, like RG-213U and RG-8U, prior to connector installation. For the 50 ohm beam or loop antenna feedpoint with stud terminals, the DXE-FFPC-SO239, DXE-FFPM and DXE-FBC are THE perfect combination of feedpoint connection, mounting and RF choke.

DX Engineering BEB-2 Insulated Boom-to-Element Brackets

Not only are DX Engineering BEB-2 Insulated Boom-To-Element Brackets better for antenna performance, they are actually less-expensive than bolting your Yagi together using all metal brackets and clamps! BEB-2 Insulated Boom-To-Element Brackets offer a convenient, low cost method for the insulated attachment of elements when building Yagi, LPDA or other antennas on 2 in. booms. An insulated, split driven element Yagi fed with a high quality balun achieves a predictable, balanced pattern for maximum performance and quieter receive! BEB-2 Insulated Boom-to-Element Brackets are 6.500 in. wide and accept a 0.875 in. element, which is suitable for antennas built for 6 meters up through 20 meters with reasonable wind survivability. For larger antennas employing 3.0 in. booms and larger elements, please use our DXE-BEB-1 Boom-to-Element Brackets. The DXE-BEB-2 brackets come in 2 pieces and they bolt together securely with DXE-BEB-2HWK hardware kits and Gorilla Grip® stainless steel hardware clamps which also hold them securely to the boom. DXE-BEB-2HWK Hardware Kits for DXE-BEB-2 Brackets are sold separately. The DXE-BEB-2 Insulated Boom-to-Element Brackets are made from an extremely strong polymer that is also highly UV resistant. When bolted to your 2 in. boom with our hardware kit, they can easily support a split 20 meter element without a fiberglass centerpiece. You may also want to look at our DXE-HMS-1P Hairpin Driven Element Matching System, Boom-To-Mast Plates and our DX Engineering and COMTEK Baluns to complete your Dream Beam. DX Engineering can also supply your aluminum tubing needs for your custom antenna designs. After running your simulations in YO, EZNEC, AO or whatever Yagi antenna electrical design program that you use, you may have been surprised to realize that there are corrections to the element length that need to be made if you use just metal plates and clamps for bolting your antennas together. If you don't make the corrections to the element lengths then the whole antenna could actually end up somewhat off frequency. DX Engineering BEB-2 Insulated Boom-to-Element Brackets separate and insulate the element from the boom, thereby requiring no element length corrections. You can cut the tubing just like the antenna design program tells you and it will work as well as your computer model! Don't forget to purchase a copy of Yagi Mechanical to design your elements to resonate at the correct frequency and have the desired wind survivability. You can build very affordable, high performance antenna with DX Engineering BEB-2 Insulated Boom-to-Element Brackets.

DX Engineering Feedpoint Connectors

DX Engineering Feedpoint Connectors provide a direct transition from coaxial cable to feedpoint for Yagi, Loop Fed Arrays (LFA), Rotatable Dipoles and other antennas that do not have a coaxial connector. Three Feedpoint Connector types are available; SO-239 UHF Female, Type-N Female and 7-16 DIN Female. Each Feedpoint Connector (FPC) features silver-soldered solid tinned-copper 12 AWG wire leads to the connector, which is epoxy potted into a plastic housing, 1.573 inch square and 0.787 inch deep, for a weather-sealed direct feedpoint connection. Of course, additional weatherproofing should be applied to the male to female connector junction, as is typically suggested. DX Engineering Feedpoint Connectors' two wire leads are about 4 in. each, for connection to balanced driven elements of beams and rotatable dipoles on which a coaxial connector does not exist. A longer length of wire is easily soldered to these tinned wires, if required, but increasing connection spacing drives up feedpoint impedance and increases the possibility of mismatch. FPCs are ideal for antennas, especially phased antenna pairs or multiples, on which a coaxial cable ferrite RF bead choke is required at the feedpoint, in place of a traditional enclosed balun. DXE-FPC units do not have mounting clamps, straps or holes. They are intended to be supported by the coax cable attachment to the boom or mast and by the connections to the antenna. An appropriate center insulator kit, such as the DXE-UWA-KIT and coaxial cable strain relief, DXE-CSR213-1, can accommodate the use of Feedpoint Connectors SO-239 UHF Female, Type-N and 7-16DIN for specialized and high power wire antennas, also accommodating a ferrite RF Bead Choke on the RG-213U size coax cable, 0.405 in. diameter.

Fabricated from 0.250 in. 6061-T651 polished aluminum, UMP-1 plates are pre-drilled to use the DX Engineering CAVS-1P 1.750 in. V-Bolt Saddle Clamps and SAD-075A 0.750 in. and SAD-050A 0.500 in. U-Bolt Saddle Clamps. So, you can use these plates on a myriad of projects that cover sizes from 0.500 in. through 1.750 in. With UMP-1 plates you can couple two different sizes of tubing, extend mounting pipes, attach to ground rods, mount light verticals, use a pair to attach a cross-arm to the side of a tower for antenna mounting, or mount a lightning rod to the top of a tower or mast. Depending on orientation and application, both sets of clamps may be mounted on the same side or on opposite sides of the plate, and the holes allow the pairs of clamps to be mounted parallel or perpendicular to the other for maximum flexibility! You can easily modify and customize these aluminum plates for your specific applications. See our other Antenna Building and Mounting Plates if your plans require 2.000 in. through 3.000 in. sizes and when rotational systems demand the maximum grip available from DX Engineering's larger U-Bolt Saddle Clamps. DX Engineering UMP-1 Universal Mounting Plates offer great versatility for your antenna project--and your wallet!

DX Engineering Antenna Element Tubing Kits

DX Engineering Antenna Element Tubing Kits includes enough raw aluminum tubing, uncut and not drilled, for one element regardless of type; driven, reflector or director. The antenna builder should select according to band, the number of kits that correspond to the number of elements in their particular directional antenna kit instructions. Included sections start at typical diameters and lengths for the indicated band and are sufficient for the entire single element. These are only raw aluminum tubing kits. All supplementary items, such as hardware, insulators and clamps, are sold separately.

DX Engineering KX4O Vertical Dipole Antenna Support Plates

KX4O Vertical Dipole Antenna Support Plates are used in the construction of John Huggins' version of an increasingly popular portable HF antenna. It is called an "Asymmetrical Hatted Vertical Dipole," but John shortened the name of his version to "AHVD". It uses mostly off-the-shelf DX Engineering hardware to construct a very robust and versatile portable antenna. His approach is basically a tripod-mounted vertical dipole radiator with an inverted "hat" that serves as an asymmetrical counterpoise. It's an upside-down "T" in appearance! Assembled largely from telescoping aluminum tubes, the antenna elements may have their length easily changed to allow for single-band resonant-coverage from 20 through 10-meters. Due to the relatively large-diameter but lightweight aluminum tubing and electrical design of the antenna, bandwidth is very wide. At the center of John's version of the AHVD are two important items--the support plate and a 1 ft. long slit aluminum tube. DX Engineering is pleased to offer the pre-drilled support plate and the aluminum tube that are at the heart of the antenna! Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. When you consider building a five-band 20 through 10-meter HF portable antenna, give the KX4O version of the Asymmetrical Hatted Vertical Dipole a try. An engineering drawing, design discussion, and list of materials are available on the KX4O website. These KX4O Vertical Dipole Antenna Support Plates, as well as many other parts for this antenna, are now available from DX Engineering!
