DX Engineering Utility Enclosure Kits

DX Engineering Utility Enclosure Kits are ideal for the outdoor mounting of many types of lightning protectors or other equipment. This enclosure and grounding plate kit accommodates coaxial protectors with a flange mount or bracket so connectors are parallel with the grounding plate. (Bulkhead protectors that mount the connector through a grounding panel cannot be used.) DX Engineering DXE-UE-2P Utility Enclosure kits are manufactured from weather-resistant, high-impact thermoplastic material that protects the inside components against rain and directed water spray. The housing and wire entrance grommet materials used in the enclosure are fire-retardant and UV-stabilized and resist degradation from weathering, environmental contaminants, chemical fertilizers, and insecticide sprays. The exterior of the housing may be painted with latex or oil base paints if needed to help blend into the location. Because these kits have many potential applications, no holes have been drilled in the enclosure. However, mounting holes have been pre-drilled in the aluminum mounting plate. Four of the six sheet metal screws are included to secure the mounting plate to the enclosure; the other two sheet metal screws are for mounting the copper strap clamp to the mounting plate. Watertight feedthrough couplers mount to the top of the enclosure; drilling or cutting with a hole saw is required. Eleven port openings exist in the bottom--two are large for conduit coaxial entry/exit, and nine are smaller for coaxial cable, rotor cable, Telco lines, and more. All openings are sealed by a weathertight foam insert. NOTE: The DXE-UE-2P accommodates coaxial protectors that have a Flange Mount bracket, or those that work with an accessory bracket, to mount the connectors parallel with the grounding plate. Bulkhead Mount protectors that place a connector through the grounding plate cannot be used. These kits include: * 13 in. W x 14 in. H x 4 in. D enclosure (11-1/2 in. W x 11 in. H x 3-1/8 in. D) * 6 stainless steel hex washer head slotted sheet metal #8 x 1/2 in. screws * 8 in. W x 11.0 in. H x 1/8 in. D pre-drilled 6061-T6 aluminum mounting plate * Four weathertight coaxial cable feedthrough couplers, ideal for most RG8U or RG-213 sized coaxial cable * One 2 in. x 1/2 in. x 1/8 in. thick copper strap clamp with two drilled holes Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. The "Z" design makes it easy to install and remove coaxial cable connectors. This ground rod clamp for surge protector mounting is ideal for permanent installations as well as for temporary installations, such as Field Day. The DXE-UCGC-Z Copper Grounding Clamp Features: - Mounts up to six protectors onto one ground rod - Fits common standard 5/8 in. through 3/4 in. diameter ground rods - Made from 1/16 in. thick Copper Alloy 110 for maximum conductivity -"Z" bends in the copper for easier installation and removal of coax connectors on protectors - Easy to assemble two-piece construction. Each plate is approximately 3-1/4 in. wide x 4-3/16 in. tall - Stainless Steel hardware is included: Four 1/4 in.-20 x 3/4 in. long hex head bolts, eight 1/4 in. flat washers, four 1/4 in.-20 Nyloc hex nuts - Using this copper clamp is faster and easier than building up the joint for an exothermic weld The DXE-UCGC-Z can easily mount up to six lightning protectors. The photo shows two DX Engineering and two PolyPhaser lightning protectors installed on a DXE-UCGC-Z mounted to a 5/8 in. diameter ground rod. Other lightning protection products can also be mounted, such as the DXE-IS-RCT Control Line Protector and Alpha Delta Lightning Protectors. Additionally, a solid copper strap from the station grounding bus bar may also be sandwiched between the copper plates of this clamp and the ground rod (not shown). An anti-seize compound such as JTL-12555 Jet Lube SS-30 Pure Copper Anti-Seize must be used on the threads to prevent galling or seizing of stainless steel hardware. All connections must be generously coated with a conductive joint compound to prevent moisture penetration and enhance conductivity. Properly weatherproofing coaxial cables and lightning protectors is important to ensure the longevity of the connection and maintain optimal performance. Prior to attaching the lightning protectors, install the coaxial cables to the lightning protectors and weather seal the PL-259 connectors using TES-2155 Temflex Rubber Sealing Tape with an overwrap of TES-06132 3M Super 33+ Vinyl Tape or 3M Scotch Super 88 Premium Vinyl Tape (TES-06143). These easily removable connector sealing tapes are now available in kits. The lightning protector bodies are not weatherproof and it is suggested to use a DX Engineering Weatherproofing Kits to permanently cover the body of the protectors. Some users have also suggested covering the entire assembly with a plastic food container or plastic trash bin As with all electronic equipment, take proper safety considerations. For example: Do not install if there is a storm anywhere in your area. Do not adjust or touch the grounding system equipment when there is a storm anywhere in your area. Make sure all power is removed before making any adjustments or working on any ground system or grounding components. Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. DX Engineering Ladder Line Surge Protector

Built by popular demand, the DX Engineering Ladder Line Surge Protector is ready to be placed in line with your balanced feedline antenna system! For many years, hams have asked us for a surge protector for use with their 300 ohm and 450 ohm ladder line fed antennas. Decades ago automotive spark plugs or arc gaps were used for shunting lightning pulses from balanced feeders to ground. But, you never really knew if they were going to work, if they really were continuing to work or if they were affecting the tuning. Here is the modern approach to providing surge protection for ladder line fed antennas. Made with components similar to those used in coaxial protectors, the DXE-LLSP uses much larger capacitors, resistors and gas discharge tubes on each leg of the ladder line to offer excellent surge protection capabilities at high SWR. These components are rated to handle 5 kW, so this protector will easily handle well over legal limit RF power at the high standing wave ratios expected on balanced line. Plus, the Ladder Line Surge Protector bleeds off the static charge that is collected on your antenna from wind driven sand, rain and snow! The DXE-LLSP Ladder Line Surge Protector is built to sustain multiple minor surges. As with any surge protector, there is no guarantee that a direct hit from lightning will be stopped. A replacement parts kit is also available to refurbish your pulse damaged protector: DXE-LLSP-RP Features of the DX Engineering Ladder Line Surge Protector: • Standard size NEMA enclosure; 4 x 4 x 2 in. nominal box dimensions; mounting tab holes on centers: 4.625 x 2.125 in. • Works with 450 ohm or 300 ohm Ladder Line and 600 ohm open-wire feeder • Internal Gas Discharge Tubes, Capacitors and Resistors • Can withstand multiple minor surges and shunts them to ground • Bleeds off static charge collected from wind driven snow, rain and sand • Weep holes allow any buildup of internal moisture to drain out • Handles well over legal limit at high SWR as expected on balanced line NOTE: The DXE-LLSP is an RF only device that does not carry DC voltage. Therefore it cannot be tested with a multimeter. It must be tested with an analyzer and a 300 ohm resistor, or by connecting an antenna feedline. If there is infinite SWR or no receive, the components have been damaged by lightning pulse energy and need to be replaced with the DXE-LLSP-RP Ladder Line Surge Protector Replacement Parts Kit. Order the DX Engineering Ladder Line Surge Protector for your balanced feedline antenna system today!

DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits

DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits provide an effective method of reducing stray RF pickup by equipment and interconnecting cables. Used under and connected to radio equipment, these 1/16 inch thick, pre-drilled aluminum or copper sheets create an RF reference plane that is also connected to the existing grounding bus. As described in the ARRL's "Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur 2nd Edition" by H. Ward Silver, N0AX; a large surface area of metal improves upon the single conductor grounding buss by equalizing the RF E-field (electric field) around equipment and attached cables. This reduces voltage differences between pieces of equipment and the associated currents that cause RF interference to transceivers, microphones and accessories. The reduction in RF interference improves both transmitted and received signal quality. Radio RF Ground Plane Kits are available in 12 versions; three sizes of aluminum or copper plate with hardware and the same three sizes of aluminum or copper plates with companion mounting boards made of 1/2 inch thick Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), with hardware. All kits are intended for indoor use only. As used by top contesters and DXers alike, a flat metal sheet placed under equipment, along with physically short grounding braids, wires and interconnection cables can significantly reduce the RF voltage differences between cables and equipment. The chance of RF trouble in your equipment is reduced by installing DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits in your station.

DX Engineering's Aluminum Radio RF Ground Plane Kits

DX Engineering's Aluminum Radio RF Ground Plane Kits provide an effective method of reducing stray RF pickup by equipment and interconnecting cables. Used under and in back of equipment, this 1/16 inch thick, pre-drilled aluminum sheet creates an RF reference plane that is typically connected to the existing grounding bus, and provides an economical alternative to a copper sheet. As described in the ARRL book "Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur, 2nd Edition" by H. Ward Silver, N0AX; a large surface area of metal improves upon the single conductor grounding buss by equalizing the RF E-field (electric field) around equipment and attached cables.
