DX Engineering Vertical Ground Mount Tubing
DX Engineering Vertical Ground Mount Tubing is very high-strength 4130 Chromoly steel intended to be placed into a concrete foundation for the installation and support of large vertical antennas, tilt pivot bases and other antenna and mast tilt mounts. We have made these mounting masts the appropriate length for the intended installation and for common ground shipment at a reasonable cost; no more searching for a special pipe or paying high freight charges! Cut from our original 4130 Chromoly Masts that are nominally 22 ft., this high-strength galvanized steel tubing is available only in two tubing sizes at nominal lengths for the intended ground mount use. DXE-VGMT-2CG: 2.0 in. OD is about 5 ft.4 in. length, + or - 2 in. DXE-VGMT-3CG: 3.0 in. OD is about 7 ft. 3 in. length, + or - 3 in. Each tube features a 0.250 in. wall thickness and meets ASTM A-513 Type 5 ratings. They are cold-drawn, electric-weld, high-strength carbon-steel tubing with a yield stress rating of over 100,000 psi! Tensile strength minimum is above 110,000 psi. Minimum Rockwell B hardness is 96. They are temperature stress-relieved to ensure consistent mechanical strength. Galvanizing on these masts meets ASTM A123/A123M specifications. The surface finish has a nearly polished appearance. DX Engineering Bulk Radial Wire Kits will help you achieve optimal performance with a ground-mounted vertical and allow you to install as many radials as possible. These PVC-insulated stranded-copper radial wires are UV-resistant and roll out easily, unlike the wire that's commonly available at "big box" stores. Any type of ground-mounted vertical antenna—an Inverted L for instance—can usually benefit from the addition of a radial system. The increase in field currents provided by radials improves efficiency and antenna Q. Compared to bare wire, DX Engineering Bulk Radial Wire Kits will last much longer when exposed to the elements. These kits include either steel or biodegradable resin radial wire staples for holding down the radials until grass grows over them. The kits work extremely well with DX Engineering Radial Plates (DXE-RADP-3) to create a complete radial system. Biodegradable staples allow easy installation of radial wires and will degrade and disappear in about a year when they are no longer needed, making them environmentally friendly! Biodegradable staples are intended for softer ground, where they may be pushed or lightly tapped into the ground with a tool head. Since they are a resin material, the staples are subject to breaking in rocky or hard soil. Butternut 160 Meter Add-On Kits
Butternut 160 Meter Add-On Kit BUT-TBR-160X is designed specifically for the Butternut HF9V, HF6V and HF2V HF Vertical models. It is a parallel tuned circuit that consists of a coil and four high voltage RF capacitors with custom mounting plates, brackets and clamps. This assembly is installed at the base of the BUTTERNUT® HF Vertical antennas to achieve operation on 160 meters. This new design by DX Engineering incorporates four larger capacitors mounted between two aluminum plates. These new capacitor plates act as heat sinks, to reduce frequency drift when the components heat up under RF power and environmental conditions. Recommended maximum 160M power is 1,000W PEP SSB, 500W CW, 150W Digital (FT8, FT4, RTTY, etc). IMPORTANT NOTES • Your Butternut vertical antenna must be properly tuned on all bands PRIOR to adding this 160 meter kit. A very good radial system is a requirement for reasonable performance on all bands, but especially on the 160 meter band. Due to the effect of the installed 160 meter kit, the other bands will need to be retuned and the original shunt coil will require significant adjustment. • SWR bandwidth on 160 meters is very narrow. When tuning the antenna with an analyzer connected to the antenna matching section coax, choose the EXACT frequency you desire. DO NOT use any antenna tuner to operate on an off-resonance frequency above 2:1 SWR. Use of an antenna tuner is not possible because this is a very high-Q antenna inductor and capacitor combination that will not tolerate overheating. • Prolonged tune-up at maximum power levels must be avoided. Exceeding these levels may cause damage to the antenna, amplifier or transceiver. The TBR-160X functions as an inductive reactance in series with the antenna feedpoint, loading the antenna structure to resonate in the 160 meter band. On the higher bands the TBR-160X produces decreasing values of capacitive reactance, raising the resonant frequency (by 300-400 kHz) on 80 & 40 meters. Above 7 MHz this detuning is negligible and the antenna can be adjusted on all bands to compensate, as needed. In general, the only compromise that one must accept for the sake of 160 meter operation is reduced SWR bandwidth on 80 meters and to a lesser extent, on 40 meters with the HF2V/6V/9V. The TBR-160X SWR bandwidth of 2:1 or less on 160 meters will depend to a large extent on the efficiency of the ground system used with the antenna; 10 kHz is a typical figure with a fair-to-good ground system and a relatively short antenna such as the HF6V/9V. With the longer HF2V, especially if top loading "umbrella" wires are used, SWR bandwidths of 15 to 35 kHz between 2:1 points are possible. Even if greater bandwidths are possible with poorer, higher loss ground systems, performance would suffer. The best possible ground systems should always be used with electrically short loaded antennas. Since the Butternut verticals are very short antennas for 160 meters, full-size antenna performance should not be expected. A critical component of this type of antenna system is a very good radial system; 30 to 60 or more radials of 45 to 65 feet each is a requirement. Even at best the bandwidth will be very narrow so when tuning for 160 meters, you will have to determine which frequency in the band you want to use.

The Wire elements and any supporting ropes are arranged on spacer plates with "speed slots" around the non-conductive fiberglass mast. When a proper radial system is attached to the radial plate, the Venture will achieve quarter-wave vertical performance with natural resonance and low SWR on the bands it's configured for with no antenna tuner required. Band hopping DXing and simultaneous multi-band multiplex operations are supported. The Venture is rated at 1500W SSB/CW, 400W FT8 and other digital modes. The Venture antenna is only 23 feet (7 m) so setup is a cinch in the field. SWR bandwidth is typically 300 kHz on the bands the antenna is cut for. The Venture, while being designed for 40, 20 and 15 meters, can be used on 10 and 6 meters with an antenna tuner. Alloy Plates: Aircraft quality 5251 alloy, laser cut in England before deburring to give that "hammered" look, which eliminates sharp edges and provides a nice finish. DX10 Wire: Made in England for DX Commander, DX10 wire has an outstanding reputation for both strength and in particular, extreme flexibility. The insulation is "arctic grade" and still flexible down to -40° F. Originally designed for military use, this insulation is particularly strong but highly flexible and the stranded annealed copper wire is approximately 19 AWG and is made from 24 strands of 0.008 in.
