ARRL Receiving Antennas for the Radio Amateur

"Transmitting and receiving antennas have different jobs to do." Although the fundamental characteristics of antennas apply to both transmission and reception, the requirements and priorities of receiving antennas can be vastly different from those of transmitting antennas. "Receiving Antennas for the Radio Amateur" focuses entirely on active and passive receiving antennas and their associated circuits. There are relatively few cases where a radio amateur cannot benefit from a separate, well-designed receiving antenna or antenna system. On the low bands, including our new allocations at 630 and 2,200 meters, heavy emphasis on the receiving end of these radio paths is essential for success. The active antenna holds a prominent position in this book, as it offers good receiving performance while taking up minimal space. Recent developments in radio frequency (RF) semiconductors, especially low-noise RF operational amplifiers, have made a number of previously difficult-to-implement active antenna designs a very simple task. Table of Contents: * Receiving Antennas are Different! * Your Friend, the Decibel * The Preamplifier Problem * The Amazing Disappearing Antenna * The Receiving Antenna as a Signal Generator * The Quest for Infinite Power Gain * The Role of the Resistor in the Receiving Antenna * The Small Loop Antenna * Achieving the Perfect Null * You Can Make Accurate Field Strength Measurements * The Aperiodic Loop * The Q Factor * The Beverage: In a Class of Its Own * Dealing with Non-Reciprocal Propagation * The Evolution of the eXOgon Antenna * The Lowdown on LF * The Random Wire * Arrays and Beamforming Networks * Powering Your Active Antenna * Diversity Methods * NVIS Receiving Antennas * Receiving Antenna Projects and Accessories * Materials and Construction Techniques * Our Two New Bands

Amsats and Hamsats

"Amsats and Hamsats" is simply the most comprehensive guide available on how you communicate through amateur radio satellites—and how to receive signals from other small satellites and 'weather' satellites. Written by best-selling amateur radio author Andrew Barron, ZL3DW, here's the answer to everything you wanted to know about this exciting world of satellites. The 368-page paperback begins by answering questions like, 'how do satellites stay in orbit' and 'why are they so expensive to launch?' … before moving onto sections about the history of amateur radio satellites, the mathematics governing orbits, different types of satellites and their orbits. It covers the equipment you need to track and use the amateur satellites and some of the satellite-tracking software that's available. There are detailed sections covering feeders, masthead preamplifiers, antenna systems, and automated rotator control. You'll read details about FUN cube Satellites, Weather Satellites and even the International Space Station. If you want to know the art of the possible and what satellites are available, where they are, new ones that are planned, and even the bands you can operate, "Amsats and Hamsats" has the answers. There's much more included, as this book provides the ultimate guide to operating satellites.

HAMSAT

Since the launch of Sputnik back in 1957, radio amateurs have been listening to artificial satellites orbiting above the Earth. A mere four years after the launch of Sputnik, radio amateurs put their own satellite into orbit, thus beginning a series of amateur satellite launches that continues over 50 years later with the CubeSat operations of today. "HAMSAT: Amateur Radio Satellites Explained" offers details of what you need to know about amateur radio satellite operation. This 128-page paperback begins with the history of the OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) program, detailing the various incarnations from Oscar 1 in 1961 through to the present day. The book explains what's needed in an amateur radio ground station, from the antenna to the receiver. You'll find rotator information for tracking the satellite, designs for pre-amplifiers, and all manner of technical detail. There's a chapter dedicated to the ground station antennas, sharing the performance of many commercially available systems—and information on The Endless Dilemma of Polarization. You can read about Ground-Space-Ground Propagation, the Doppler Effect, Keplerian Elements; plus suitable transceivers, software, recent developments in this exciting field, and much more.
