Transceivers and other station gear often need a separate 12 Vdc power supply—but there are hundreds of options available, so choosing the right one is important. There are two types of circuits in a power supply, either switching or linear. Switching supplies are lightweight and portable, but they use cooling fans that can contribute to a noisy environment. Conversely, heavy-duty linear power supplies use a larger, heavier transformer. That makes them less portable, however they won’t cause RF noise or need cooling fans. You’ll want a well-filtered supply with the proper DC output voltage and a continuous...

Switching supplies are lightweight and portable, but they use cooling fans that can contribute to a noisy environment. Conversely, heavy-duty linear power supplies use a larger, heavier transformer. That makes them less portable, however they won’t cause RF noise or need cooling fans. You’ll want a well-filtered supply with the proper DC output voltage and a continuous current rating at least 20 percent higher than your maximum requirements. DX Engineering stocks power supplies from manufacturers like Alinco, Astron, Daiwa, Diamond Antenna, DX Engineering, Icom, Kenwood, MFJ, NTE Electronics, Sangean, Samlex and Yaesu.
12 Volt Power, Inc. PS-30 Compact Power Supplies
12 Volt Power, Inc. PS-30 Compact Power Supplies are a newly designed, compact, and lightweight desktop power supply built for performance and versatility. It delivers 30-amp surge and 25-amp continuous DC output at 13.8VDCs, making it ideal for powering HF, VHF, UHF, GMRS, and commercial two-way radios, as well as most 12-volt lights and equipment. For easy connectivity, the PS-30 features two front-mounted genuine Anderson Powerpole connectors and rear-mounted ¼-inch binding posts. The PS-30 power supply features an AC input range of 100–130VAC (60Hz) and uses a dual cooling system that combines natural convection airflow with a temperature-controlled variable speed fan. The fan runs continuously and automatically adjusts its speed based on internal temperature—providing quiet, efficient cooling during normal operation and increased airflow under heavy loads for maximum protection and performance
