Grounding and Lightning Protection
PolyPhaser Coaxial Lightning Protectors
PolyPhaser Coaxial Lightning Protectors are designed for general, single-transmitter use in the 1.5 to 700 MHz frequency range. PolyPhaser protectors are available in two mounting styles: "Bulkhead Mount" protectors have a longer connector and hardware to mount it through the grounding panel. "Flange Mount" protectors anchor to a grounding panel with both connectors parallel to a flat surface. PolyPhaser Coaxial Lightning Protectors use a DC blocked specially configured gas tube design that has no DC continuity between the two center pins. PolyPhaser's multi-strike products are designed to pass RF frequencies and block all DC. These protectors appear as a DC open between surge and protected ports and offer industry-standard protection. PolyPhaser protectors are suitable for all types of antennas, even "floating" antennas that are not DC grounded. With PolyPhaser DC Blocked protectors, any slow voltage build up from wind driven rain, snow or dust, will not get to the equipment. As the protector reaches threshold for turn-on in a dc blocked circuit, it will go into a momentary soft turn-on as the gas barely ionizes and bleeds the static charge to ground. This does not create noise since it will not get to the arc mode and lasts only a short time. PolyPhaser protection devices have been chosen and specified by communications systems engineers and technicians for 24/7 service in broadcasting, commercial, military and government installations. Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. Trusted by Amateur Radio operators for over 40 years, PolyPhaser Coaxial Lightning Protectors are ready for your antenna system installations. They are available here, at DX Engineering.

DX Engineering Rotator Control Line Protectors
DX Engineering Rotator Control Line Protectors are custom made surge protectors designed for use on rotator cables - up to 8 conductors. We routinely protect power and antenna cables, why ignore rotator control cables? These protectors are also ideal for control lines of remote antenna switches and any low voltage control system where voltages are normally below 60V DC or AC. External terminals allow convenient connection while the surge devices remain securely protected inside the metal enclosure. DXE-IS-RCT features include: * Weatherproof metal enclosure with cover, mounting stud and terminal gaskets to deter water from entering the enclosure. * Terminal strips to connect up to eight rotator control wires * 1/4 in. x 20 mounting stud allowing multiple mounting configurations * Each line connection has an individual shunt MOV for maximum surge protection * Voltage spikes exceeding 82 Vdc (in either polarity) will be shunted to ground * RoHS compliant construction DXE-IS-RCT protectors are recommended to be installed on a tower leg or ground rod using an optional DXE-J-1 or DXE-J-2 Grounding Clamp or a DXE-UCGC Copper Ground Rod Clamp. The location you choose for your DXE-IS-RCT should provide a good, low-impedance ground connection. The surface to which a grounding clamp is connected should be thoroughly cleaned to a bright-colored surface and then treated with a conductive anti-oxidant coating. This procedure will minimize weather-related complications and improve conductivity for your DXE-IS-RCT. DXE-CCK Copper Cleaning Kits provide cleaning pads and copper paste which is ideal for this application. If a tower or mast is being used and is properly grounded, your DXE-IS-RCT may be connected to the base of that structure just above the grounding point. For best results, follow the installation instructions carefully. As with all electronic equipment, observe proper safety considerations. For example: Do not install your DXE-IS-RCT if there is a storm anywhere in your area. Do not adjust or touch the grounding system equipment when there is a storm anywhere in your area. Make sure all power is removed before making any adjustments or working on any ground system or grounding components. DXE-IS-RCT Specs: Surge Energy: 6500 A or 38 J (Max energy 8/20) Response Time: 10 ns typical, 25 ns max. Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. Paradan Radio Dual Antenna Disconnectors
Paradan Radio Dual Antenna Disconnectors reduce the chance of station damage from lightning pulses. The Dual Antenna Disconnector automatically disconnects and isolates any radio equipped with two antenna ports—and it grounds both antenna SO-239 coaxial connectors. The two radio SO-239 connectors may also be used for two separate transceivers or receivers. The Dual Antenna Disconnector is excellent for protecting remote stations from lightning pulse damage. The Dual Antenna Disconnector prevents static-discharge, surges, and lightning-pulse effects from damaging your radio and associated equipment. When the transceiver is turned OFF, both antenna coax center conductors and shields are shorted together and grounded—and both coax center conductors and coax shields are disconnected from the radio. When the transceiver is powered ON, the Disconnector re-connects both coaxial cables for normal operating. Power for the Disconnector can be supplied by either the transceiver's auxiliary DC power output or by the station power supply that is turned off when not operating. For stations where the power supply is always left on, the Radio ON Sensor unit tells the Disconnector to reconnect coaxial cable when the radio is turned on. For correct operation the Dual Antenna Disconnector requires a good earth ground. The unit is supplied with a ground wire ring terminal, four wire splice connectors, and a Powerpole® connector pair. Paradan Radio Dual Antenna Disconnector Specifications: * Power Handling: Over 1.5 kW on each circuit * Insertion Loss: Less than 0.05 dB below 29 MHz; 0.4 dB at 54 MHz; 1 dB at 144 MHz * Relay Operating Voltage: 10-18 V dc * Current: 120 mA at 13.8 V, when turned ON to connect antennas * LED: Illuminates green when relays connect the antennas for operating * Relays: Four relays with 15 amp contacts each, protected for reverse spikes * Case: Grounded to Antenna connectors and isolated from Radio coaxial connectors * Control Wire: 6 ft., two-conductor AWG 18 with RCA phono plug * Control Input: Diode protected against reverse polarity; RF filtered * Active Lightning Protection: Gas Discharge Tube on both Antenna inputs * Case Ground Stud: 1/4 in. Paradan Radio Antenna Disconnect Actuators
Paradan Radio Antenna Disconnect Actuators are installed in the coaxial cable that feeds the antenna. When power from your transceiver or station power supply is turned off, they automatically disconnect the antenna from your station and ground the antenna feedline. This reduces the chance of station damage from lightning while you're away. The ADA also has a gas discharge tube to protect the radio from lightning pulse damage while operating. Eliminating the wear and tear on transceiver and station connectors from repeated physical disconnection and reconnection, the Paradan Antenna Disconnection Actuator takes care of grounding antenna feedline automatically. It safely prevents static-discharge, surges, and lightning pulse effects from damaging your radio and associated equipment without having to remember to unplug the system and wear out the connectors. This is especially helpful for stations that are located on upper floors of the home where grounding is an issue. The water-resistant enclosure of the ADA may be installed in the shack at the output of the transceiver, amplifier or tuner—or outdoors in line with the antenna coaxial cable. Connect the DC cable into +12 Vdc source, either from the transceiver or power supply that is turned off when not operating. When power is on, the ADA is powered, and the antenna feedline is automatically connected. When DC is off, the antenna's coax center and shield are shorted together and grounded. The case is grounded to the antenna's coax connector but is isolated from the radio's coaxial connector. The Paradan Antenna Disconnect Actuator LED illuminates green when its two 15 ampere contacts RF relays connect the antenna. The relays have diode protected coils to eliminate reverse spikes, and they handle 1,500 watts of RF from 1.8 to 50 MHz; they also have two SO-239 (UHF female) connectors. Specifications for the Paradan Radio Antenna Disconnect Actuator, PDN-P-ADA-1: * Operating Power: 10-18 Vdc at 60 mA when turned ON to connect antenna * Insertion Loss: <0.05 dB at 30 MHz, <0.1 dB at 54 MHz * Power Handling: 1.5 kW * Control Wire: Two-conductor 18 AWG with RCA phono plug RED to center pin, BLACK to plug shell, may be lengthened or re-terminated as needed * Control Input: Diode protected against reverse polarity; RF filtered * Active Lightning Protection: Gas Discharge Tube on antenna coax input * Case Ground: 0.25 in. stud with washers, lock washer and nut * Case: Diecast aluminum, black powdercoat, white print, water-resistant * Size: 4.8 x 2.6 x 1.6 in., mounting flanges with four-hole on-center spacing of 5.25 in. by 1.50 in. * Weight: 0.81 lbs. Georgia Copper Flexible Copper Grounding Straps
Georgia Copper Flexible Copper Straps are solid and bendable metal straps that are used to build low-inductance, high performance grounding systems. The use of these copper straps provides the best grounding systems because they have greater surface area and lower inductance per foot than the equivalent cross-section of wire. Hams find all sorts of uses for copper straps, for superior antenna feedpoint connections as well as creating a bus for grounding. Equipment racks may be bonded to ground using copper straps. Don't rely on the rack frame to provide bonding. Tie all of the power supplies, tuners, racked amplifiers, and other equipment together with low-resistance copper. Especially useful for any application outdoors and for use directly in or near soils, flexible solid copper straps will maintain a proper, low-impedance connection long after small-gauge wires and tinned copper braids have weathered and disintegrated. Copper straps are specified by communications system designers and are used extensively for above-ground and underground connections to radiators, tower and ground rods for commercial equipment rooms, sheds, and tower installations. Professional communications engineers know the value of systems that employ copper straps. They are available in various widths and at a thickness to suite your application. If you are using wire or braid at feedpoint connections or to provide grounding, equipment bonding or other critical connections for your Amateur Radio station, consider upgrading to long-lasting and solid Georgia Copper Flexible Copper Straps from DX Engineering!

DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits
DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits provide an effective method of reducing stray RF pickup by equipment and interconnecting cables. Used under and connected to radio equipment, these 1/16 inch thick, pre-drilled aluminum or copper sheets create an RF reference plane that is also connected to the existing grounding bus. As described in the ARRL's "Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur 2nd Edition" by H. Ward Silver, N0AX; a large surface area of metal improves upon the single conductor grounding buss by equalizing the RF E-field (electric field) around equipment and attached cables. This reduces voltage differences between pieces of equipment and the associated currents that cause RF interference to transceivers, microphones and accessories. The reduction in RF interference improves both transmitted and received signal quality. Radio RF Ground Plane Kits are available in 12 versions; three sizes of aluminum or copper plate with hardware and the same three sizes of aluminum or copper plates with companion mounting boards made of 1/2 inch thick Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), with hardware. All kits are intended for indoor use only. As used by top contesters and DXers alike, a flat metal sheet placed under equipment, along with physically short grounding braids, wires and interconnection cables can significantly reduce the RF voltage differences between cables and equipment. The chance of RF trouble in your equipment is reduced by installing DX Engineering Radio RF Ground Plane Kits in your station.
