DX Engineering Glass Antenna Insulators
Sometimes the oldest stuff turns out to be the best. Our exclusive DX Engineering Glass Antenna Insulators hearken back to the earliest years of "wireless" transmissions. Because Irish ship builders of the day pronounced "double" as "dooble," these insulators were once known as "glass doobies" due to their tempered-glass material and double-ended form. Glass insulators offer the highest of electrical insulation properties, strength and resilience available in any insulator of its size. There will be no signal bleed off with these little glass wonders! DX Engineering's DXE-TGI-2 end insulators are 3.69 in. long with 1.125 in. diameter double ends. Each smoothed and rounded end has a 5/16 in. (0.3125 in.) hole that will accommodate many wire and rope sizes without chafing. Their tensile strength and resistance to arcing will withstand almost any wire-antenna use within the Amateur Radio service, domestic or abroad. Since these are end insulators, they are sold as a pair. These are not toy-like models or replica insulators; these are fully functional, high strength glass insulators with excellent RF properties! But, that is not to say that they aren't gorgeous and worthy of showing off! They certainly are perfect for display as a radio room decoration or as a living area conversation piece. Very smooth and pleasing to the touch, these are attractive glass insulators that make a fantastic gift for the ham who thought he had everything! Note: Whenever the DX Engineering "Documentation" tab is available, please look at the associated files for additional product information. In this instance, some interesting information on "Glass Doobies." Bring back a bit of the essence of the Amateur Radio of yesteryear in your wire antenna construction. These glass insulators are actually quite striking in their appearance. Order DX Engineering Glass Antenna Insulators and gain the benefits of using a material that has provided the best wire-antenna insulation for more than a century!

Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes
Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes are available in several sizes and strength ratings, perfect for support of wire antennas, vertical antennas and antenna masts, as well as support of Yagi booms and elements. Mastrant ropes are of the highest quality for strength and are UV-protected for extended longevity. MASTRANT-O is a highly reflective rope (bright orange plus braided reflective tape) based on long-term proven Polyester (Dacron) product line. It is designed for maximum visibility in public places such as Field Day and POTA activities. Like all Mastrant ropes, it is UV stable and resistant to all weather conditions. It has low weight, great abrasion resistance, great durability and is nonconductive (no effect whatsoever on your antenna). Moreover, in contrast to ropes made from aramid fibers (Kevlar, Vectran, Technora, Twaron), it has knot strength about 60 %. Mastrant-P and Mastrant-R Ropes are stronger than other synthetic ropes of the same size, made from proven modern polyester. Mastrant-Q is a new rope made from a blend of polyester and polypropylene, designed specifically for guying applications. It offers an excellent performance-to-price ratio and has a knot strength of approximately 60%. It replaces Mastrant-P in diameters of 6 mm (1/4 in.) and larger. Mastrant-S is a similar polyester/polypropylene rope, distinguished by its highly reflective strands for increased visibility. Mastrant-M is their highest strength rope with the Dyneema® DM20 core, a superior synthetic rope offering high performance at an affordable price. Very high strength, negligible elongation, very low weight, and great abrasion resistance are all attributes that make Mastrant-M the best rope for guying. Larger, stronger sizes of Mastrant-M are used in Europe and other parts of the world for tower guying. Durability and safety are of prime concern to ensure that an antenna installation remains fully operational for a long time. Antennas and guy lines are exposed to changing weather conditions, mechanical strain, UV radiation, humidity, and more. These non-conductive synthetic fibers have all the necessary qualities: high strength, negligible stretch but good flexibility, long life, low moisture collection, fast drying, a minimum bending radius adding the ability to tie knots, good UV radiation resistance, weather durability and resistance to acids and alkali. Conversely, steel guying wires are heavy, difficult to work with, and their strength deteriorates with time due to corrosion and general aging. Electrical conductivity of steel guys is an undesirable feature, as they interact with the antennas and adversely modify radiation patterns. Thanks to recent developments in synthetic materials, both amateur and professional users are changing over to non-conductive guys and ropes. Mastrant offers these products for a variety of applications, from thin support lines used for wire antennas and beams, to rope guys for supporting small and portable masts and vertical antennas. When you need quality rope to install, replace, or modify your antenna systems, consider Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes, now available from DX Engineering.

The Paraset Radio
The Paraset Radio, by Hiroki Kato, AH6CY, is a story of a WWII Spy-Radio and How to Build a Working Replica. This book describes the gripping story behind the Paraset - a unique spy-radio, dropped behind enemy lines in the dark days of WWII. This radio being both light weight and state of the art for the time was concealed in a suitcase, making ideal for use by the spies of SOE. This book describes how the Paraset was used, the technical specification and even how you might build your own replica. Written by acknowledged Paraset enthusiast Hiroki Kato, AH6CY this book was inspired by the epic stories connected to this radio and is meticulously researched. These radios were first made in workshops in England at Whaddon Hall and then at Little Horwood, near Bletchley Park. Sadly, most were destroyed at the end of the war and today only a few original Parasets remain in museums and the hands of private collectors. However, inspired by the Paraset stories, radio amateurs across the world have been building working reproductions. The Paraset Radio provides a history of this remarkable Morse code only radio that was low power (4-5W), had no meters or even an on/off switch. Hiroki relates how the SOE Agents used the radio in occupied Europe and how the radio was developed during the war. There are schematics of the design of the radio along with advice on how to build your own working example that can be used on amateur radio bands. There is also information on building a Paraset from one of the kits available. Hiroki even shares details of some of the uses he has put his own Paraset radio to on the Amateur Radio bands. The Paraset Radio is a rare insight into a radio that provided vital spy communications in WWII. It may also provide the inspiration for you to build your own working Paraset radio, so that you can get a taste of wartime operating, but without the danger of a fatal 'knock on the door'.

RTTY/PSK31 for Radio Amateurs
Data modes appear to be a daunting prospect to newly licensed radio amateurs, but they don't have to be. "RTTY/PSK31 for Radio Amateurs" is a practical guide to the two most popular data modes, RTTY and PSK31. It's an expanded and fully updated 2nd edition—at 50 percent bigger that the 1st edition, there's no better guide to these data modes. HAMSAT
Since the launch of Sputnik back in 1957, radio amateurs have been listening to artificial satellites orbiting above the Earth. A mere four years after the launch of Sputnik, radio amateurs put their own satellite into orbit, thus beginning a series of amateur satellite launches that continues over 50 years later with the CubeSat operations of today. "HAMSAT: Amateur Radio Satellites Explained" offers details of what you need to know about amateur radio satellite operation. This 128-page paperback begins with the history of the OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio) program, detailing the various incarnations from Oscar 1 in 1961 through to the present day. The book explains what's needed in an amateur radio ground station, from the antenna to the receiver. You'll find rotator information for tracking the satellite, designs for pre-amplifiers, and all manner of technical detail. There's a chapter dedicated to the ground station antennas, sharing the performance of many commercially available systems—and information on The Endless Dilemma of Polarization. You can read about Ground-Space-Ground Propagation, the Doppler Effect, Keplerian Elements; plus suitable transceivers, software, recent developments in this exciting field, and much more.

SOTA Explained
Summits on the Air (SOTA), is one of fastest developing award schemes that have come into existence in recent years. For the active hillwalker and the home-based chaser of summits alike, this program offers endless fascination. "SOTA Explained" provides the essential guide to this program, hilltop radio, and much more. Taking a portable radio station into the hills and operating from a summit is a fascinating and rewarding way to combine the very best aspects of walking and of amateur radio. SOTA activity is also inexpensive, providing the opportunity to achieve a great deal in amateur radio. Many appreciate the freedom this sort of operation offers and the benefits of having a high radio station far from urban electrical interference. At altitude, even modest sets can deliver astonishing performance: communication across the country and across the continent is routinely available—and on many days, mountain-to-mountain conversations flow across the world. This 160-page paperback also provides advice for those who do not venture onto the hills but still want to participate in SOTA. There's a whole chapter dedicated to chasers—from the bands to choose, how propagation affects your operation, chasing DX stations, and rare SOTA activations. Not only does "SOTA Explained" detail how SOTA works, but there's advice on safe hillwalking, setting up simple and cheap SOTA stations, and modes of operation. You'll read technical advice on improving your first station, the antennas to choose, and how to run SOTA stations on HF. The book isn't just for those new to SOTA; the more experienced operator will find much of use, too. Be warned: after reading this book, you will never see a hilltop in the same way again.
