Elimination of Electrical Noise

Electrical noise is a problem for most radio amateurs today and many are forced off the radio bands because of it. Don Pinnock, G3HVA, is a firm believer that radio amateurs not be forced from the air, but should deal with these problems instead. This new second edition of "Elimination of Electrical Noise" tells of Don's personal experiences in doing this—and provides solutions to noise problems that will help many. "Elimination of Electrical Noise" details the various types of noise 30kHz to 30MHz, from computers to electrical light fittings and much more. Faulty or maladjusted machinery or electronic devices can produce so much interference that normal reception is considerably affected. Computers are almost an essential in a modern shack. New to this edition is a chapter on how to reduce or eliminate noise from the computer equipment itself and from the numerous interconnecting leads. Even equipment operating below or close to International Standards can generate enough electrical noise to severely reduce the chances of a nearby amateur being able to enjoy his chosen hobby. In "Elimination of Electrical Noise," Don describes how to track down a noise source, how to deal with it at its source, and how to put up defenses in your own station to reduce noise entering via the mains wiring. He reports on his own experiments with selecting wire antennas that have the potential for increased immunity to external noise. And for those looking for a new house, there's advice on how to choose it from the point of view of noise. If you suffer from electrical noise problems, Don's experiences and advice may well provide the solution you are looking for. "Elimination of Electrical Noise" provides the help you may need to take charge, tackle that noise problem, and get the most from your hobby.

Permatex Dielectric Grease

Permatex Dielectric Grease may be used in RF connectors to prevent moisture ingress. Feedlines and connectors will last longer, providing peak performance for many more years with the use of dielectric grease on the threads of RF connectors. Preventing the effects of moisture is critical in RF feedline connections. Untreated connector threads will oxidize, corrode and seize more quickly if water vapor can enter and collect inside RF connectors. Ultimately, moisture will enter the coaxial cable, promoting contamination and corrosion, resulting in elevated noise levels and increased signal loss. Permatex Dielectric Grease, placed into the air space of RF connectors and their threads, will stop the adverse effects of water vapor and water ingress. Avoiding direct application on mating surfaces of connector center pins, dielectric grease is safe to use in the air spaces and threads of RF connectors.

DX Engineering Coaxial Connectors

The DX Engineering Coaxial Connectors shown here include two-part, silver-plated PL-259 and Type-N connectors designed to be crimped or soldered to the shield and soldered to the center conductor. These connectors deliver excellent performance for HF, VHF, and UHF applications. DX Engineering's PL-259 and Type-N connectors feature silver-plated brass throughout the outer and inner conductors and use PTFE dielectric—the best RF insulator—for very low loss and high electrical breakdown strength. Also available are DX Engineering Silver-Plated Reducers, which adapt standard solder-type PL-259 and Type-N connectors for use with single-shield RG-8X and RG-58U coaxial cables. While many types and grades of coaxial RF connectors are offered on the market, DX Engineering provides only top-quality connectors with silver-plated brass bodies and PTFE dielectric. These two-part solder-style connectors fit RG-213, RG-8U, RG-8X/LMR240 and other standard 0.405 in. single-braid shield coaxial cables intended for soldering*—but not 400MAX or LMR-400 double-shield cables. These solder-shield and solder-center connectors are the preferred choice for many Amateur Radio operators installing single-braid shield coaxial cables. Order your DX Engineering Coaxial Connectors and Reducers today! *NOTE: To prevent noise issues, modern engineering practice has determined that double shield cables that have one foil and one braid should not be soldered to the braid, including DXE-400MAX and LMR-400 style cables. Those cables should be terminated with crimp shield or clamp shield style connectors, also available from DX Engineering.

SOTAbeams WSPRlite Power Conditioner Kits

SOTAbeams WSPRlite Power Conditioner Kits are ideal for running your WSPRlite Antenna Performance Analysis System from a battery or "wall-wart" power supply. WSPRlite Power Conditioners convert any 7 - 20 Volt DC supply into a super-clean and quiet 5 Volt USB supply - perfect for your WSPRlite! SOTAbeams use a linear regulator to avoid the noise problems so often associated with cheap switching regulators. Rated at 200 mA and with a re-settable breaker, these power conditioners will keep your WSPRlite happy - and safe too. Their DC input is protected against voltage spikes by a special TVS diode and is provided with additional smoothing with a low-ESR input capacitor. These features have been added in case you wish to use your WSPRlite in a mobile setting. Unlike simple chargers, SOTAbeams also condition the data lines to avoid unwanted noise affecting your WSPRlite. WSPRlite Power Conditioner Kits are supplied with a PowerPole for the DC input and a standard USB output. It's ideal for running your WSPRlite at home or in the field! The PCB has M3 mounting holes (mounting hardware is not supplied with board kit). These kits require assembly, including soldering to a PC board. However, they are suitable for beginners. Supply clean, stable power to your WSPRlite! Order SOTAbeams WSPRlite Power Conditioner Kits from DX Engineering!
