RF Design Basics

"RF Design Basics" is the latest book by acclaimed author John Fielding, ZS5JF. It's a practical guide to Radio Frequency (RF) design rather than the more usual textbook written for post-graduate electronics engineers. Aimed at those who want to design and build their own RF equipment, this 192-page paperback provides a gentle introduction to the art and science of RF design. The 14 chapters cover subjects such as tuned circuits, receiver design, oscillators, frequency multipliers, design of RF filters, impedance matching, the pi tank network, making RF measurements, and both solid-state and valve RF power amplifiers. One chapter explains the meaning of S parameters, while another is devoted to understanding the dual gate Mosfet. Much attention is given to the necessity of cooling valve Pas—and there's even a practical design for water cooling a large linear amplifier, a subject overlooked by most other publications. "RF Design Basics" neatly fills the gap between a beginner's introduction to radio and RF design textbooks. Written for the average radio amateur, this book is an accessible and useful reference work for everyone interested in RF design.

Valve Amplifiers Explained

This new book by John Fielding, ZS5JF, is for everyone who uses, or is considering using, an HF or VHF linear amplifier. While some amateurs may be of the opinion that valves are an obsolete technology and semiconductors are a better way, Fielding very definitely thinks otherwise! After reading the 200-page paperback you'll be under no illusions that, in his opinion, valves are far superior to semiconductor devices for most linear amplifier applications. As he says, "When you need real power and very good linearity, a valve is very hard to beat." Essential reading for anyone building a valve linear amplifier, the author guides you through the choice of valves for various purposes. "Valve Amplifiers Explained" starts with a chapter on basic valve theory and explains how to interpret valve characteristic curves. The various classes of operation of amplifiers—Class A, Class B, Class AB1, Class AB2, and Class C—are all covered in detail. The relative merits of grounded cathode and grounded grid amplifiers are discussed, and a chapter is devoted to the causes of distortion in valve amplifiers (and how to avoid such distortion). Fielding explains that linearity is primarily a function of the power dissipation of the device and the supply voltage—and he devotes a whole chapter to good power supply design. The various protection circuits that an amplifier should have are also covered. While this book is equally relevant to HF and VHF enthusiasts, a chapter is devoted specifically to the design of VHF RF power amplifiers. Another chapter even discusses liquid cooling of valve amplifiers. There is advice too for those who, instead of building an amplifier, are considering purchasing a commercially made linear. Those who use commercial linear amplifiers and want to understand more about how they work will not be disappointed. As Fielding says, "There is a certain aura about valve equipment. The glowing filaments and the gentle buzz of a high voltage power supply are a sort of magic few have had the pleasure of knowing." After reading "Valve Amplifiers Explained," you'll want to join that elite few!

The Magic Bands

The Six Meter (50MHz) and Four Meter (70MHz) bands are known as the 'Magic bands' by radio amateurs across the world. Written by the well-known 6m enthusiast Don Field, G3XTT, this book provides a comprehensive guide to these fascinating bands and lets you into the secrets that make them so popular. They attract a special kind of enthusiast, someone who is prepared to put in long hours on a seemingly dead band, waiting for a fleeting opening or finding ways to make QSOs by means of meteors or even by reflecting signals off the moon. Propagation on these bands, especially 6m, lies between that of the HF bands and that of the higher VHF/UHF bands, and often brings surprises to those who are prepared. As such, these bands attract enthusiasts from both the HF and VHF worlds. "The Magic Bands" builds on Fields' earlier books "The 6 Meter Handbook" and "Six and Four" by adding lots of material on data modes operation, which has grown enormously in popularity in recent years with the advent of FT8. There's detail of the many of the new radios that have appeared in recent years with 6m and, increasingly, 4m capabilities. Readers will find two new antenna designs from Justin Johnson, G0KSC, of InnovAntennas especially produced for this book. Software is also discussed, not just for data modes but for remote operation, tracking of achievements, and much more. You'll see material highlighting the achievements of several of the leading operators on the 6m band. The 6m band is now almost universally available across the amateur radio world, while in recent years 4m access has been granted to many more countries, often on a permanent basis. Why miss out? "The Magic Bands" is recommended for anyone who wants to try out these bands—and is a comprehensive guide for those already hooked on these fascinating pieces of spectrum.

Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes

Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes are available in several sizes and strength ratings, perfect for support of wire antennas, vertical antennas and antenna masts, as well as support of Yagi booms and elements. Mastrant ropes are of the highest quality for strength and are UV-protected for extended longevity. MASTRANT-O is a highly reflective rope (bright orange plus braided reflective tape) based on long-term proven Polyester (Dacron) product line. It is designed for maximum visibility in public places such as Field Day and POTA activities. Like all Mastrant ropes, it is UV stable and resistant to all weather conditions. It has low weight, great abrasion resistance, great durability and is nonconductive (no effect whatsoever on your antenna). Moreover, in contrast to ropes made from aramid fibers (Kevlar, Vectran, Technora, Twaron), it has knot strength about 60 %. Mastrant-P and Mastrant-R Ropes are stronger than other synthetic ropes of the same size, made from proven modern polyester. Mastrant-Q is a new rope made from a blend of polyester and polypropylene, designed specifically for guying applications. It offers an excellent performance-to-price ratio and has a knot strength of approximately 60%. It replaces Mastrant-P in diameters of 6 mm (1/4 in.) and larger. Mastrant-S is a similar polyester/polypropylene rope, distinguished by its highly reflective strands for increased visibility. Mastrant-M is their highest strength rope with the Dyneema® DM20 core, a superior synthetic rope offering high performance at an affordable price. Very high strength, negligible elongation, very low weight, and great abrasion resistance are all attributes that make Mastrant-M the best rope for guying. Larger, stronger sizes of Mastrant-M are used in Europe and other parts of the world for tower guying. Durability and safety are of prime concern to ensure that an antenna installation remains fully operational for a long time. Antennas and guy lines are exposed to changing weather conditions, mechanical strain, UV radiation, humidity, and more. These non-conductive synthetic fibers have all the necessary qualities: high strength, negligible stretch but good flexibility, long life, low moisture collection, fast drying, a minimum bending radius adding the ability to tie knots, good UV radiation resistance, weather durability and resistance to acids and alkali. Conversely, steel guying wires are heavy, difficult to work with, and their strength deteriorates with time due to corrosion and general aging. Electrical conductivity of steel guys is an undesirable feature, as they interact with the antennas and adversely modify radiation patterns. Thanks to recent developments in synthetic materials, both amateur and professional users are changing over to non-conductive guys and ropes. Mastrant offers these products for a variety of applications, from thin support lines used for wire antennas and beams, to rope guys for supporting small and portable masts and vertical antennas. When you need quality rope to install, replace, or modify your antenna systems, consider Mastrant Antenna Support and Guy Line Ropes, now available from DX Engineering.

DX Engineering TWIG End Fed Half Wave QRP Antenna Feedpoint Kits

DX Engineering TWIG End Fed Half Wave QRP Antenna Feedpoint Kits are a compact, essential component for building a low-power (QRP) end-fed half-wave antenna system. Perfect for portable operations and outdoor activities such as POTA® or SOTA™, this feedpoint kit simplifies setup while delivering reliable performance. The TWIG is rated for 25W SSB, 10W CW, and 5W Digital modes, delivering an SWR of less than 2:1 without an antenna tuner. At its core, the TWIG features a 49:1 transformer that matches the impedance of the user supplied half-wave element wire to 50-ohms, ensuring compatibility with most QRP transceivers. The BNC female connector pairs easily with recommended coax cables, and when the element wire is properly tuned, no external tuner is required—reducing the amount of gear you need to carry. The kit includes a built-in quick connector designed for 24/26 AWG antenna wire, making element installation fast and secure. Two end insulators and clips are also provided, ensuring reliable strain relief and easy attachment of the antenna wire in the field. Installation is quick and straightforward, allowing you to get on the air fast and start making contacts. No additional counterpoise wire is necessary; the coax cable serves that function when installed correctly. For best results, use optional 24/26 AWG wire such as CEW-VIZ24-YEL100, a high-visibility, PVC-insulated stranded copper wire. A typical setup uses a sloper configuration, with the feedpoint about 6–7 feet above ground and the wire sloping upward to 25–30 feet. Recommended coax length is 25–35 feet with BNC connectors and adding an optional DXE-LPFC-BNC Feedline Choke at the transceiver end is suggested. While the antenna supports multiple configurations, wire length will vary based on installation.
