Advanced Fuel Dynamics PROFLEX Commander Flex Fuel Systems Now Available at Summit Racing

E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) is where it’s at for making silly amounts of horsepower. E85 has a higher octane rating than gasoline alone, and also provides a cooling effect on the incoming air/fuel charge that allows the engine to make more power with a reduced chance of detonation.

But according to the engineers at Advanced Fuel Dynamics, the amount of ethanol in E85 can vary wildly. That means the effective octane rating of a given tankful of E85 can be higher or lower than the ‘official’ 104 octane rating. Without knowing that ethanol level, you can’t extract maximum power from your engine.

Advanced Fuel Dynamics’ PROFLEX Commander Flex Fuel System fixes that problem. It plumbs into your existing fuel system and allows you to run E85, gasoline, or any blend of the two you want—no need to adjust or switch tuning maps or drain fuel from your tank.

Here’s how the PROFLEX Commander works. It has a flex fuel sensor that monitors ethanol content in the fuel in real time. The PROFLEX control module reads that information and adjusts the fuel injector pulse width based on the percentage of ethanol. The higher the ethanol content, the more fuel the injectors spray into the engine. That forces the car’s ECU to alter the air/fuel ratio to compensate for the extra fuel—and the more air and fuel you stuff into the engine, the more horsepower and torque it can make.

The PROFLEX Commander Flex Fuel System does not alter your car’s ECU or any tuneups you have installed. The kits come with the control module, GM-style flex fuel sensor, wiring, and fuel system plumbing depending on application. You can even monitor the fuel’s ethanol content on your Bluetooth-enabled phone or tablet with the free PROFLEX mobile app.
