Auburn Gear Differentials for Ford 8.8 and 9 Inch: More Traction for Better Performance
Ford’s 8.8 and 9 inch axle assemblies can be found under about a zillion Ford cars and trucks. Plenty strong for street performance and racing, the 8.8 is popular fodder for Jeep swaps, and the 9 inch’s removable center section means changing gear ratios is a snap—perfect for racing.
You can make your 8.8 or 9 inch even better with an Auburn Gear differential. They deliver proven traction to the driven wheels on everything from asphalt to dirt and rocks.
Limited Slip Differentials for 8.8 and 9 Inch
Auburn Gear’s limited slip design uses cone clutches coupled to bevel side gears and preload springs. As torque is transmitted through the side gears to the axle shafts, separating forces and spring preload firmly seat the cones into the differential case, providing torque to both wheels. When cornering, the side gear separating forces also decrease, allowing the axle shafts to rotate independently, delivering more torque to the wheel with the most traction.
The High Performance Series differential is designed for street and light off-road use.
The Pro Series differential has a heavier-duty cone clutch and preload springs that react more quickly to tire slippage than the High Performance differential. That makes it ideal for high-horsepower cars.
The Autocross Road Race differential is designed to improve a vehicle’s cornering ability by increasing engagement as the lateral G-force increases. That means the wheels will receive more “bite” as the turn gets tighter. The Autocross is available only for the 8.8 inch axle.
Max Lock Full Locker for 8.8 and 9 Inch
The Max Lock is an automatic full locker design that locks and unlocks based on traction conditions. It provides power to both wheels like a full spool, but unlocks when cornering as one wheel spins faster. When you’re navigating through extreme terrain or rock crawling and one of the wheels is in the air, the wheel on the ground will receive the engine power and keep you going. The Max Lock is designed for open (non-limited slip) differential cases.
ECTED Max Locker for 8.8
The electronically controlled ECTED Max is a selectable locker with on-the-fly activation. It allows drivers to go from a limited-slip to full-locker differential with the flick of a switch. In addition to being a good choice for race applications, the ECTED Max’s versatility makes it an excellent differential for maintenance/recovery rigs, emergency response vehicles, and snow plow/work trucks. The lockers operate quietly with no shift fork or pins to line up to change the locker mode.
Summit Racing carries Auburn Gear ring and pinion gear sets, master gear installation kits, and service parts for Auburn differentials and lockers.
