Back Your Small Block Ford with a TCI 4x Four-Speed 700R4 or 4L80E Transmission Package
It may sound like blasphemy, but running a GM 700R4 or 4L80E four-speed automatic behind a small block Ford is pretty popular. And one of the best ways to do that is with a TCI 4x Four-Speed 700R4 or 4L80E Transmission Package. The packages include an aluminum bellhousing, an adapter flexplate that uses the engine crankshaft bolt pattern and GM torque converter pattern, and a pilot adapter to bolt the transmission to a small block Ford with 28 or 50 ounce external balance.
The 700R4-based 4x transmission is available in versions to handle up to 550 or 750 horsepower. It uses a Constant Pressure Valve Body that eliminates the need for a finicky TV cable, the most common cause of 700R4 transmission failure.
The 4L80E-based 4x transmission is controlled electronically with a TCI EZ-TCU, TCI TCU 2.0, or a factory GM transmission controller. It is rated to handle up to 850 horsepower.
The TCI 4x Four-Speed 700R4 and 4L80E Transmission Packages come with a dipstick, a transmission cooler, and two quarts of Max Shift transmission fluid. TCI doesn’t include a GM-style lockup torque converter so you can choose one with the appropriate stall speed for your application. Summit Racing carries TCI Breakaway, Streetfighter, and Super Streetfighter converters that will do the job nicely.
