Break in Your Engine Properly with Driven Break-In Oil

We received some interesting news from the oil experts at Joe Gibbs Driven. We know that some engine builders like to use diesel motor oil as a break-in lubricant for new engines. That’s because it contains plenty of zinc (ZDDP) to protect flat tappet camshafts. Apparently this oil is being replaced with a new formulation, API CK-4. And just like today’s motor oils for gas engines, CK-4 has much lower levels of ZDDP, on the order of 800 parts per million (ppm). That’s not enough to prevent premature cam wear or even failure in engines with flat tappet camshafts, or protect critical engine parts in diesel engines with their extremely high compression ratios and engine temperatures.

Fortunately, Summit Racing offers Driven engine break-in oil for gasoline and diesel engines that contains plenty of ZDDP to protect your camshaft and other internal engine parts from damage.

BR Break-in Oil for Gas Engines
BR Break-in Oil is what Joe Gibbs Racing uses to break-in and dyno its race engines. The petroleum-based oil contains the highest levels of zinc and phosphorus to promote piston ring seal and provide maximum protection for flat tapped cams and lifters during initial break-in. Compatible with methanol and high-octane race fuels, BR Break-in Oil can be used for up to two hours of break-in/dyno time before changing to regular motor oil. It is available in 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-40, and 15W-50 weights.

DBR Break-in Oil for Diesel Engines
DBR is designed for high-performance and turbocharged diesel engines. The petroleum-based 15W-40 oil has an anti-wear formulation that doesn’t rely on conventional friction modifiers, so it delivers proper parts surface mating and piston ring sealing during the critical break-in process. The oil’s low detergent level allows the ZDDP additive to adhere directly to all ferrous metal wear surfaces for maximum scuff protection for flat tappet cams, bushing lifters, cam driven fuel pumps, turbocharger bearings, and cylinder bores. DBR is also safe for engines fitted with exhaust after treatment devices. It is good for dyno testing or up to 1,000 miles on the street, with no ZDDP or other additives required.

Once you have your engine properly broken in, keep on protecting it with Driven motor oil. Summit Racing carries Driven HR Series conventional oil for gas engines and CJ-4 oil for diesel engines. They all have high levels of ZDDP for maximum protection.
