California Pony Cars Products for First-Gen Mustang Now Available at Summit Racing
California Pony Cars has been a big player in the Mustang restoration parts business since the early 1980s, when the first-gen Mustang scene started taking off. The company is well-known for its components and conversion kits to swap a T-5 five-speed or AOD automatic transmission into early Mustangs.
California Pony Cars is also proud of the fact that it makes its die-cast and plastic molded parts in the USA on precision, production-style tooling, just like the factory did. Other manufacturers that do short runs of parts use a sand casting process that makes it very hard to reproduce the fine details—stuff that gets noticed by hardcore Mustang people.
Summit Racing carries a nice selection of California Pony Cars reproduction parts and transmission swap kits:
T-5 Conversion Kits
Nothing wakes up an early Mustang quite like a T-5 five-speed manual transmission, especially for the six-cylinder cars. You’ll love loafing at 2,000 RPM on the highway, too.
California Pony Cars T-5 Conversion Kits come with the major components needed to fit a T-5 in a 1964.5 to 1979 Mustang—adapter plate, transmission crossmember, transmission mount, and yoke. The kits line up the shifter perfectly with the factory shifter opening—no cutting of precious sheetmetal.
You have a couple options when it comes to the bellhousing and clutch linkage. You can use the factory six-bolt bellhousing and the factory bellcrank-style clutch linkage, or you can use a Fox-body Mustang bellhousing, throwout arm, and cable-style clutch linkage. You will need a new driveshaft to accommodate the shorter T-5 transmission yoke. This video will walk you through the installation process.
AOD Conversion Kit 1967-73 Mustang
If you like a self-shifter, a California Pony Cars AOD Conversion Kit will adapt an AOD four-speed automatic transmission to a small block-powered Mustang that came with a C-4 or C-6 automatic. The kit includes:
• Crossmember
• Transmission mount
• Slip yoke
• Flexplate
• AOD shift linkage
• Kick-down cable
We also carry AOD Conversion Kits for 1965-66 V8/auto Mustangs with the factory, Holley, or Edelbrock carburetors, plus kits for 1967-70 V8/auto Mustangs with an Edelbrock or Holley carburetor.
Headlight Bucket Repair Kit for 1964.5-66 Mustang
Ford made the headlight assemblies on the 1964.5-66 Mustangs out of pot metal. The mounting base has a thin metal mounting tab that secures it to the fender. After 50-plus years, that tab often breaks off, allowing the headlight assembly to move away from the fender. If you see a big gap between the headlight and the fender, you have a busted mounting tab.
This California Pony Cars Headlight Bucket Repair Kit is an easy fix for the broken mounting tab, saving you the cost of sourcing a good used or reproduction headlight assembly. The kit includes die-cast brackets that fit on top of the assembly bases. Glue them in place with the included JB Weld and you essentially recreate the missing tabs. This video gives you a better idea on how the brackets work.
Bullet Sideview Mirrors for 1965-67 Mustang
These concours-quality bullet mirrors are accurate reproductions of the Rotunda accessory mirrors offered at Ford dealers back in the day. The mirrors have flat glass lenses and your choice of black or silver die-cast aluminum housings with a chrome plated bezel. If you have a period-accurate reproduction AC Cobra, these mirrors are styled after the originals used back in the 1960s.
Summit Racing also carries California Pony Cars reproduction shifters, Lemans-style gas caps, grille emblems, and other parts for first-gen Mustangs, plus a line of NXT Generation dress-up parts for late model Mustang, Focus, and Fiesta:
