Davies Craig Remote Cooling Products Now Available at Summit Racing
It gets pretty darn hot in Australia—hot enough to cause major cooling issues in race cars and hot rods with modified, high horsepower engines. In 1971, two smart Aussies named Daryl Davies and Bill Craig engineered the Thermatic fan, one of the first aftermarket electric fans made specifically for automotive use.
Since then, the Davies Craig cooling machine has introduced high quality electric water pumps, pump controllers, and accessory products to keep your race car, hot rod, or off-road vehicle cool while freeing up a couple extra horsepower. That’s a nice combination.
Electric Water Pumps
Dump your belt-driven mechanical water pump—it’s costing you horsepower and cooling efficiency. The horsepower used by a mechanical pump increases by the cube of its speed. When the pump speed doubles, the power it robs from the engine increases by eight times, all the way to maximum engine RPM. At idle or very low engine RPM—especially in hot conditions—the mechanical pump is turning over slowly too, so it can’t provide the extra coolant flow required to keep the engine cool.
A Davies Craig Electric Water Pump solves both issues. It doesn’t run off an engine-driven belt so it’s far more efficient. That means no power loss, faster engine warmup, better engine temperature management, and less chance of engine heat soak. The universal-fit Davies Craig pump mounts inline with the bottom radiator hose, and is ideal for remote mount cooling systems. This video shows a typical pump installation with an optional electric fan and controller.
Summit Racing carries Davies Craig Electric Water Pumps in several capacities from 21 to 39 gallons per minute. Some pumps are available in kits with hose adapters and clamps.
Electric Water Pump and Fan Controllers
These digital controllers are designed to manage the operation of an electric water pump and an electric fan. You can set the target temperature anywhere from 140 to 212 degrees F, then “lock” the controller to maintain that temperature. When the engine reaches the desired temperature, the controller will continually vary the water pump and fan speed to maintain that temperature under all conditions. Davies Craig recommends setting the target temperature based on the engine’s thermostat rating.
The controller can also be used to eliminate heat soak by letting the water pump and fan run after you shut off the ignition. You can set it for time (three minutes) or temperature drop (14 degrees F below target temperature). Additional features include:
• Cabin-mount LCD screen with indicators for coolant temperature, set/target temperature; voltage, and other functions
• Warning alarms for over/under temperature, sensor error, and over/under voltage
• Suitable for 12 and 24 volt electrical systems
• Compatible with Davies Craig and other billet-style electric water pumps
Thermatic Electric Fans
Davies Craig Thermatic Electric Fans provide constant airflow through the radiator, improving engine cooling and freeing up horsepower normally consumed by an engine-driven mechanical fan. The electric fans are reversible and are available in airflow ratings from 400 to 2,199 CFM. Digital fan controller switches are also available.
Summit Racing also carries Davies Craig electric water pump and controller combos, electric booster water pumps (perfect for air-to-water intercoolers!), and water pump installation kits.
