The best indicator of a failing pack is a decline in fuel economy due to the vehicle’s gas engine kicking on more often. Other signs include large swings in the battery’s state of charge or a drop in charge even when the vehicle is not in use.

Most hybrid vehicle manufacturers warranty the battery packs for about eight years or 100,000 miles. After that, replacement is on you. • Every battery pack core is disassembled down to its component parts—good parts are cleaned and bad parts are properly recycled
• The battery cells are cycled, or conditioned, by discharging them to their lowest healthy state of charge, then recharged to their highest capacity
• Every cell is checked during the charging process for higher than normal core temperatures. Any pack that shows red on a thermal meter is considered scrap and properly recycled
• Cells get a power (stress) test to determine the amount of energy they can give on demand. If they don't meet the minimum level, they are recycled
• Processed cells are reinstalled in the battery pack chassis, then balanced to factory state-of-charge specifications
• The balanced battery pack, clean bus bars, and other components are assembled into a complete pack, ready to install in the vehicle
