Dorman OE FIX VVT System Components Now Available at Summit Racing

Variable Valve Timing (VVT) systems have been around since the 1960s. Fast-forward to today and you’ll find VVT systems on lots of engines. In basic terms, VVT controls valve timing, valve lift, and valve duration, changing these parameters to maximize performance, fuel economy, and meet stringent emissions standards. This Jalopnik.com article is a great primer on how VVT systems work.

Camshaft phasers and solenoids are two major wear items on most VVT systems. When it’s time to replace them, use Dorman OE FIX camshaft phasers and solenoids. Dorman engineers went over these parts with a fine-tooth comb to find weak spots and make performance and durability improvements. You get better-than-OE parts and save some money compared to buying them at a dealer.

VVT Camshaft Phasers
Camshaft phasers control the camshaft(s) position relative to the crankshaft, advancing or retarding cam timing as needed. Think of it as an electronically-controlled adjustable cam sprocket.

Dorman engineers found that one cause of camshaft phaser failure is premature rotator and vane wear. To fix the problem, they made the OE FIX Camshaft Phasers out of steel, improved the rotor design, and added a strong alloy locking plate that reduces friction and allows smoother movement.

VVT Solenoids
The variable valve timing solenoid controls the flow of oil to the timing chain and gear assembly when the VVT system engages. When the solenoid’s passages get plugged with oil sludge or outright fails, the chain and gear don’t get enough oil. You know the rest of the story—parts wear out and eventually go boom.

One cause of VVT solenoid failure is excessive internal parts movement in the magnetic actuator due to a weak center tube design. Dorman’s OE FIX solenoids have a stronger copper center tube that reduces movement in the actuator, eliminating premature wear and extending solenoid life.
