Engine Power Head-to-Head Horsepower Parts Combos Now Available at Summit Racing
Engine Power’s Mike Galley and Pat Topolinski wanted to show how easy get good power from stock engine without a complete rebuild. To make things more interesting, they built a Ford 351 Windsor and a GM 6.0L LQ4 LS to very similar specs, then pitted them against each other on the Engine Power dyno. Which engine was crowned King of the Takeout Engines? You’ll have to watch the episode on Powernationtv.com to find out.
To keep both the Ford and GM guys happy, Summit Racing put together Head-to-Head Horsepower Parts Combos for each engine.
Ford 351 Windsor Long Block Combo
The 351 is a later model roller cam engine found in 1994-97 Ford trucks and SUVs. The bottom end is stock, but the engine got a top-end makeover with Trick Flow High Port® 225 cylinder heads, a Track Max® hydraulic roller camshaft and matching roller lifters, a Summit Racing billet timing set, and Proform 1.7 ratio roller rocker arms. Engine Power used a set of dyno headers designed for the raised exhaust ports of the Trick Flow heads; our combo includes a set of Trick Flow by Stainless Works swap headers for a Fox-body Mustang.
Ford 351 Windsor Induction and Ignition Combo
The 351W’s induction system is simple, but effective—Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake manifold, Quick Fuel Black Diamond 950 cfm carburetor, and a Summit Racing aluminum carburetor spacer. The ignition system is equally simple—an MSD Pro-Billet distributor and 8.5mm Super Conductor wires plus a set of E3 spark plugs.
GM LQ4 Long Block Combo
The 6.0L LQ4 engine was pulled from a lower-mileage Chevy Silverado pickup. After checking out the engine’s bottom end, Pat and Mike swapped out top end parts: Cam Motion hydraulic roller cam with Trick Flow roller lifters; Trick Flow GenX® 225 cylinder heads with Summit Racing 1.7 ratio roller rockers; a Trick Flow billet timing set and a steam line kit; and a pair of Patriot Performance Clipster LS swap headers for a second-gen Camaro.
GM LQ4 Induction and Ignition Combo
The LQ4 got a Holley Mid-Rise intake manifold, plus the same Quick Fuel Black Diamond carburetor and Summit Racing carb spacer used on the 351W. Ignition timing is handled by an MSD LS ignition controller. Engine Power used the factory ignition coils, but our combo includes a new set of MSD Streetfire coils.
