Get an HP Tuners Education with The Tuning School
Thinking about getting into late-model GM vehicle tuning with an HP Tuners VCM Suite programming package? That’s great—it’s a powerful system that unlocks your vehicle’s ECM so you can tune, calibrate, and data log to your heart’s content. But with great power comes great responsibility. If you aren’t familiar with how a late-model EFI engine works, you can find yourself in trouble quickly.
That’s why we suggest you go to school first—The Tuning School, that is. The Tuning School is a range of guides that will teach you how to navigate and use the HP Tuners VCM Suite to its fullest potential. That will save you time and effort trying to learn the system on your own, and make your tuning more successful.
The Tuning School is available for GM vehicles with Gen III/IV and Gen V LS series engines.
Beginner/Intermediate Tuning for Gen III/IV LS
This guide covers the basics of using HP Tuners software on vehicles with Gen III/IV LS engines. You’ll learn things like what the various tables, such as fuel and spark, mean; which ones you need to adjust for your specific tune; and the correct sequence of adjusting those tables. You’ll also learn a safe, repeatable tuning process for modifications like cold air intakes, cylinder head/cam swaps, and forced induction.
The guide includes a full-color manual; a MAF and VE tuning manual (including Virtual VE tuning); quick-reference tuning checklists; a digital download with example tune files; and one year of technical support.
Advanced Tuning for Gen III/IV
If you want to learn more advanced tuning techniques than the Beginner/Intermediate Course covers, here is your guide. It comes with a manual and one year of technical support, and covers these topics:
• Adaptive idle tuning
• Idle and part throttle power tuning
• Scaling the tune (MAF range extension and larger fuel injectors)
• 2- and 3-bar Speed Density tuning
• E85, Flex Fuel, and race fuel tuning
• Alcohol, methanol, and water injection tuning
• Dry and wet shot nitrous tuning
• False knock detection process
Gen V Tuning
The Gen V engines are a whole different animal from the older LS engines. This guide shows you the basics of the HP Tuners Gen V programming and how the factory ECM functions so you can properly tune it for your vehicle's modifications. Topics include:
• How the direct injection fuel system works
• The proper order of tuning including airflow, fuel, spark, and torque
• Understanding and adjusting the Virtual Torque system including Driver Demand, Peak Torque, and Virtual Torque maps
• How to adjust the direct injection fuel angle (injection timing) for maximum spray time based on actual cam timing
• How to keep the engine running at maximum power
• How to adjust the idle for large cams, turbos, and superchargers
The Gen V Tuning guide comes with a full-color manual; a MAF and Virtual VE tuning guide; quick-reference tuning checklists; and one year of technical support.
Summit Racing also carries The Tuning School GM Transmission Tuning Guide that covers tuning six-, eight-, and 10-speed electronically controlled automatics.
