Go Atomic with MSD's EFI System and Transmission Control Module

Back in the 1950s they promised we’d be in atomic-powered flying cars by now. As usual, they were wrong, but MSD has giving something pretty close—the Atomic EFI System and Transmission Control Module. They allow you to convert a carbureted engine to EFI and control a late model, electronically controlled four-speed auto transmission—and make a vehicle so equipped flat-out fly.

Atomic EFI
The Atomic EFI system is a true a bolt-on-and-go way to convert a carbureted engine to electronic fuel injection. The Atomic EFI is self-learning, has half the connections of other EFI systems, and fits on a standard square-bore carbureted intake manifold. It can support up to 620 horsepower with the proper fuel system.

The throttle body integrates the ECU, four 80 lb. fuel injectors, internal fuel rails, and the Idle Air Control solenoid into one compact unit. Rated at 1,000 cfm, the throttle body has annular rings inside the air inlets to help improve fuel atomization. That means better throttle response and drivability.

MSD incorporated the Throttle Position, MAP, Idle Air Control, and fuel pressure sensors into the ECU to keep wire clutter to a minimum. The only sensors you need to wire separately are the coolant temperature and oxygen sensors. The remote-mount Power Controller handles high-current systems like electric fans, starter, and the electric fuel pump. It connects to the ECU via MSD's CAN-Bus technology; the only other connections are ignition, battery positive, and the oxygen sensor.

Getting the Atomic EFI system up and running is easy with the hand-held controller. The system is designed to plumb into your existing returnless fuel system—no tank or other system modifications required. And, the Atomic is the only EFI system that can be run with standard points or an HEI distributor. Add an ignition box like an MSD 6A and control ignition timing through the Atomic’s ECU and hand-held controller.

Atomic Transmission Control Module
The MSD Atomic Transmission Control Module gives you the ability to adjust the operating parameters of your late model, electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Just plug in the supplied hand-held monitor and you can adjust shift points and the torque converter lockup clutch, choose shift firmness, and toggle between auto-shift and manual shift modes. MSD even includes a Dyno Mode that allows repeatable shifting when testing your vehicle on a chassis dyno.

The MSD Atomic Transmission Control Module is available as a stand-alone unit that is compatible with most OEM or aftermarket fuel injection systems or carbureted applications that have a stand-alone throttle position sensor (TPS). If you have an MSD Atomic EFI system, there is a version with MSD’s Brainwave system that allows you to seamlessly integrate the module with the EFI system’s ECU. A transmission controller harness is required for the stand-alone system, sold separately.
