Diesel engines can suffer from something called stiction. In basic terms, stiction is the drag on the moving parts in the fuel injectors caused by oil as it breaks down. A tiny amount of oil is used to drive the piston inside an injector. The fuel injectors used in modern turbodiesels have very tight tolerances and high pressures (as much as 26,000 PSI at the tip) that generate a lot of heat, which literally burns the oil and creates a buildup of residue that slows and can eventually stop an injector from functioning.
