How to Choose the Right Motive Gear Ring and Pinion Gear Set for Your Vehicle

Motive Gear ring and pinion sets are made from high-quality materials using a state-of-the art manufacturing process including computer-controlled heat-treating, CNC-machining, and cutting-edge lapping. That means more consistent tolerances for quicker gear setup, easier break-in, and quiet operation. The gears are also double lapped and have index tooth spacing with central contact patterning for precise gear mesh.

Motive Gear Standard Gear Sets are OEM replacements for daily drivers, trucks, and mild off-roading. They’re made from 8620 steel and available in many ratios for most popular GM, Ford, Chrysler, Dana, and Toyota axles, plus AAM 11.5 inch and AMC 20 axles.

The Performance Gear Sets are a step up. Made from first-run 8620 or 9310 steel, not recycled material, they can handle the torque produced by modified engines in street machines and race cars. Summit Racing offers Performance gear sets in about a zillion ratios for most GM, Ford, and Chrysler axles, including Corvette and late model Camaro IRS setups.

AX Series Gear Sets for Ford 9-inch axles are an all-new design engineered to reduce drivetrain mass and improve acceleration. Manufactured from 8620 steel, two pounds of rotating weight is eliminated during the manufacturing process before the gears are heat-treated.

The Pro Gear Sets are for serious drag racing. Available for Ford 9 inch, GM 7.5 inch, and GM 8.875 inch passenger car axles, the gears are CNC-machined from 9310 steel and heat-treated to precise hardness through a computer-controlled process. That allows the gears to absorb the high impact shock loads generated during competition. Pro Gears are not for street use.

Summit Racing also carries Motive Gear Ring and Pinion Gear and Installation Kits that make it easy to re-gear your Jeep Wrangler or GM truck to compensate for bigger than stock tires. The kits include ring and pinion gear sets for both axles, plus front and rear installation kits with top-quality Timken bearings.

And since you’ll need a way to install your new gears, Summit Racing has Motive Gear Installation Kits. They range from basic kits all the way to Master kits with everything but the kitchen sink.
