How to Choose the Right Powermaster Alternator for Your GM Vehicle
Amperage is defined as the maximum amount of electricity an alternator is capable of producing. If your vehicle’s electrical load exceeds the amperage capacity of your alternator, you’re asking for trouble. The extra amperage draw created by a high-power audio system, race electronics, lighting, etc. can cause a stock electrical system to literally melt from the inside out.
Powermaster has a pretty simple method for choosing the right-size alternator for your vehicle:
• Make a list of your vehicle’s electrical components/accessories
• Determine the amperage draw for each and add together to determine the total draw/load
• Select an alternator that delivers more amperage at idle than the total system draw
This article on our OnAllCylinders blog gets into more detail on the hows and whys of alternator selection.
Once you know how much alternator you need, Summit Racing has a Powermaster alternator to do the job, including these:
Street Alternators are available in capacities ranging from 70 amps to a whopping 240 amps. Most can be set up for one-wire operation and come with a pulley for a serpentine or V-belt accessory drive system depending on the application. Street Alternators are available in natural, polished, chrome, and black finishes.
High-Amp Alternators have the capacity to handle modern electrical systems with accessories like audio systems, aftermarket lighting, and air suspension. The alternators feature hand-wound, custom-designed stators; heavy-duty regulators and rectifiers; and a gold-plated battery post for better electrical connections. Most can be set up for one-wire operation.
XS Volt Alternators have a powerful, digitally-controlled regulating system that can handle voltage-sensitive ignition systems and lithium batteries. The alternators can adjust output in milliseconds, and the voltage can be adjusted between 13.5 and 18.5 volts to work with 12- or 16-volt electrical systems. Other features include short circuit and loss-of-ground protection, a sealed and vibration-resistant housing, and one-wire operation.
HPR Small Frame Alternators are designed with efficient internal components to produce more output while consuming less engine power. They fit the factory alternator brackets and accept the stock electrical connectors. They’re also a great choice for aftermarket accessory drive systems. Powermaster fits the HPR alternators with an OEM-style serpentine or V-belt pulley.
Race Alternators are set up for one-wire operation. They feature Powermaster’s custom smooth case, an adjustable ear bolt, a gold battery post, and a heat-dispersant coating. Race Alternators are available for 12- and 16-volt electrical systems.
Summit Racing also carries these Powermaster alternators for your GM vehicle:
• Retro Alternators that offer modern performance in a 10SI, 10DN, 12SI, or 17SI-style case
• Smooth-Look Alternators with sharp lines and edges smoothed and blended for a custom look
• SPL Alternator with 300 amps and digital regulator for racing and audio competition
• Marine Alternator for Chevy, Buick, and Olds V8 marine engines
