Keep Blowby Out of Your Air Intake with a Mishimoto Baffled Catch Can

The only thing you want to flow through your engine’s air intake is—well, air. If you’re seeing oil and fuel residue in your intake, you can thank blow-by. During the combustion cycle, high pressure on the top side of the piston pushes combustion gasses, oil droplets, and fuel vapor past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This mixture is blow-by. Modern direct injection engines are particularly vulnerable to blow-by gumming up the intake tract.

A positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system uses intake vacuum to pull blow-by from the crankcase and route it to the air intake. An oil catch can (sometimes called an air/oil separator) can be installed between the PCV valve and the intake to remove and condense oil vapor so it never reaches the intake. Where most catch cans miss the mark is the lack of sufficient surface area to let vapor cool and condense. The more surface area, the cooler blow-by becomes and the more oil can be condensed.

Mishimoto’s Baffled Oil Catch Cans use custom grooves in the inlet to increase air turbulence, ensuring all of the oil sinks to the bottom of the can. The clean air then passes through a 40-micron bronze filter to remove any remaining vapor before the air goes back to the air intake. An internal baffle keeps the collected oil from splashing around.

Made from 6061 billet aluminum, Mishimoto’s Baffled Oil Catch Cans have a drain area that can be set up in one of 27 configurations, making it easier to mate one to your existing PCV system. The top cog mounting system allows you to mount the can at multiple angles. The inlet accepts AN fittings, and the drain plug can be replaced with an -AN return line to the oil pan. The cans are 100% washable, saving you the hassle of replacing the filtration system.

Mishimoto Baffled Oil Catch Cans are available in universal and direct-fit versions for late model GM, Ford, Mopar, Nissan, and Subaru engines. They’re covered by Mishimoto’s lifetime warranty.
