Lug Nuts and Wheel Locks

Lug Bolts and Wheel Studs
There really is a difference between lug bolts and wheel studs, and Dorman makes them both. Found on many German vehicles, lug bolts are one-piece fasteners that go through the wheel and brake rotor hat and thread into the hub, locking the wheel in place. Wheel studs thread from the backside of the hub and go through the rotor and wheel, and are secured to the wheel with lug nuts. Both work equally well, it’s just a matter of what the OEMs used.

If you track your car and/or take your wheels off frequently, you can convert from lug bolts to wheel studs to make the task easier. You can’t convert from studs to bolts, though.
