Mahle PowerPak Piston and Ring Kits: Race-Proven Horsepower in a Box

You don’t have to build a race engine to benefit from a Mahle PowerPak Piston and Ring Kit. Using the experience developing parts for professional race teams, every Mahle kit is designed to reduce friction (which frees up some horsepower) and increase engine life.

Mahle forged pistons have fully machined crowns, CNC-finished pin bores, and are hand-deburred. The slipper-style skirts are treated with Mahle’s GRAFAL® coating to reduce drag, piston noise, scuffing, friction, and cylinder bore wear. A dry lubricant phosphate coating in the pin bores and ring grooves helps prevent galling and microwelding during initial engine startup and break-in.

Rounding out each kit is a set of high performance, low drag piston rings, steel wristpins, and race-proven round wire locks.

Summit Racing carries several types of PowerPak piston and ring kits:

PowerPak kits for street performance feature pistons made from 4032 aluminum alloy for tighter cylinder to wall clearances and improved temperature stability.

PowerPak Plus kits are designed for competition use. The kits feature pistons made from low-silicon 2618 aluminum alloy that better resists detonation—ideal for engines running nitrous or other power adders.

LSX Combo PowerPak kits also have 2618 aluminum alloy pistons for increased detonation resistance, plus a combination valve pocket design that will cover LS1, LS3, and LS7 cylinder heads.

Wissota PowerPak Plus kits for sportsman-level circle track racers feature gas ported pistons for improved ring sealing, which results in more horsepower.

Twisted Wedge® PowerPak kits are configured for the radical combustion chamber design of Trick Flow Specialties’ Twisted Wedge Cylinder Heads for small block Ford. The pistons are available dished with two valve reliefs or as flat tops.

Summit Racing also carries Mahle Diesel Piston and Ring Kits. Available for Dodge Cummins and GM Duramax engines, the kits feature pistons with bowls designed to mitigate piston crown erosion caused by high cylinder pressures and long duration, advanced ignition timing. They also get Mahle’s GRAFAL coating to reduce drag and increase scuff resistance.

Kits with cast pistons are designed for trucks making from 400-1,000 horsepower. They’re strong enough for competition-level pulling rigs, but since the pistons are derived from OE castings, they have daily driver durability. The lower compression ratio (.5 to 1.5 points) allows more flexibility for high output tuning.

Kits with forged pistons are best suited to dedicated drag race and pulling trucks. The pistons are machined from Mahle’s exclusive M142S alloy, which gives them excellent thermal resistance and low expansion characteristics. The piston’s steel top ring groove is eliminated to strengthen the forging.
