New at Summit Racing: COMP Cams Phaser Camshafts for Late Model Chrysler Hemi
Add more power and keep the factory Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system.
Why They’re Cool: The VVT system used on Mopar’s 2010-12 5.7 and 6.4 liter Hemi is a wonder. In simple terms, the system advances and retards the cam using a hydraulic phasing system. The ECU can adjust cam timing in real time based on engine inputs, delivering low end torque or top end horsepower when needed—all the while meeting fuel economy and emissions standards.
One problem with the VVT system is it restricts the use of high-lift, high duration cams due to potential piston-to-valve clearance issues. Until now, that is. COMP Cams’ new Chrysler Hemi Phaser Camshafts are designed specifically to the factory VVT system to improve low-end torque production and top-end horsepower over the factory camshaft. The design also maintains adequate piston-to-valve clearance without the need for stiffer valve springs. That saves time and money.
The COMP Cams Hemi Phaser Camshafts are built on billet steel cores. They require the use of COMP’s Phaser Limiter Kit to limit the degree of maximum cam phasing to 14 crank degrees (seven cam degrees, available separately.
If you want to know more about VVT systems, Hot Rod Magazine has posted a good article about them on its web site.
