It’s often said that Australia’s wildlife exists solely to kill you. The same goes for the famous Australian outback—it exists to kill improperly built 4x4s. Developed Down Under to tame the outback, Old Man Emu patterned its suspension design philosophy on the emu, a flightless Australian bird. The emu’s legs absorb most of the impact when it runs, allowing it to move over all types of terrain while its body remains virtually motionless. Old Man Emu components are designed to work together to provide the same kind of balanced performance—handling, comfort, and load carrying capability—no matter where you go off-roading.

Suspension Kits
Old Man Emu suspension kits provide a moderate increase in height with excellent handling off- and on-road. The Old Man Emu website even has a handy suspension selector that will show you the correct kit for your vehicle based on weight, accessories, engine, and other factors. 

Depending on the application, Old Man Emu suspension kits include front and rear springs, Nitrocharger Sport gas-charged monotube shocks, a steering stabilizer, and other parts needed to complete the installation.

BP-51 Bypass Shock Absorbers
Unlike most other adjustable shock absorbers that provide adjustment for compression only, Old Man Emu BP-51 shocks can be adjusted for both compression and rebound so you can tailor the shocks for your specific terrain, vehicle load, etc.

The BP-51s have a bypass design; some fluid flows through the piston and some bypasses around the piston through special passages. The greater levels of damping generated at each end of the piston stroke slows it as it approaches full compression and extension. That prevents your suspension from smacking against the bump stops, allowing larger bumps and rough terrain to be absorbed more easily. That gives you a comfortable ride during normal driving and a more controlled ride over challenging terrain.

Other BP-51 shock features include:
• Hard anodized 6061 aluminum body for increased heat dissipation and corrosion resistance
• Adjuster allows fine-tuning without removing the shock from the vehicle
• 6061 aluminum remote oil canister for increased oil volume, lowering oil temperatures
• High-temperature PTFE hose with high-flow fittings
• Large PTFE-lined spherical bearings
• Impact-resistant, high-density polyethylene shaft guard
• Hard chromed pinion shaft
• Piggy back clamp for easy connection of remote oil reservoir to shock absorber body

The BP-51 bypass shock is also available as a complete front coil-over system for 2005-18 Toyota Tacoma, 2008-15 Land Cruiser, and 2010-14 FJ Cruiser equipped with an aftermarket bumper and winch.

Dakar Leaf Springs
Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs come in a large variety of lift and spring rates so you can tailor your suspension to meet your specific needs. Add a set of Old Man Emu shocks and you’ll have a vastly improved ride, handling, and load carrying capability.

Many Dakar rear leaf springs are available with a two-stage leaf pack for optimum comfort. The vehicle rides on the primary stage when unloaded, with the secondary stage providing additional support when a heavy load is added. Other features include:

• Draw-tapered and diamond-cut leaves to progressively distribute load over a larger surface area, reducing high stresses at the leaf ends and protecting against leaf breakage
• Bolt-on leaf clamps allow installation of anti-squeak nylon liners
• Fully scragged and load-tested to ensure the spring takes a permanent "set," reducing the risk of sagging
• Graphite coating reduces friction between the spring leaves and friction pads
• Greaseable nylon interleaf liners reduce friction at the leaf tips where the load is the greatest
• Flat axle seat area allows a positive, safe axle mount to reduce spring stress
• Shot peening on the tension side of the leaves reduces spring stress, doubling spring life
