Protect Your Expensive Race Engine from Premature Wear with a Peterson Remote Oil Filter Mount with Primer
Most internal engine wear occurs at startup. That’s because engine oil pressure hasn’t had enough time to build and provide the lubrication needed to prevent metal-on-metal contact.
This issue is bad enough with a street engine that sees regular use, but it’s even worse for a drag race or circle track engine that sits more often than it runs. With all that oil sitting in the pan or dry sump tank, you have to pressurize the oiling system before you start the engine to make sure the valvetrain and bearings have a nice protective film of oil.
Peterson Fluid Systems has a pretty ingenious way to do the job. They make a Remote Oil Filter Mount with a built-in primer pump that makes quick work of pre-lubing an engine. Just stick a standard drill with a 7/16-inch socket on the pump’s drive bolt and whirl away—the pump will deliver at least 20 PSI of oil pressure in as little as 10 seconds. It’s quicker and more convenient than using a pre-luber tank, yanking the distributor to run a primer tool, or turning a dry sump oil pump pulley by hand.
The rotor-style primer pump on the Peterson Remote Oil Filter Mount has a one-way check valve. The pump draws oil from the oil pan or dry sump tank, routes it through the filter, then sends it back to the engine. A return spring in the pump closes the valve once the engine is running, sending the oil directly through the filter and back to the engine.
The Peterson Remote Oil Filter Mount with Primer can be mounted on the firewall, a chassis tube, or a dry sump tank—Summit Racing carries Peterson mounting brackets for this task. The mounts are available in various configurations with -10 or -12 AN ports and 3/4-16 or 1.5-16 oil filter threads.
