Put the Power to the Pavement with a RAM Clutch Set for Your Mustang

RAM Clutches and Ford Mustangs go together like peanut butter and jelly. And why not? They’ve both been staples in the high-performance community for over five decades. In all of those years, countless Mustangs have cruised the boulevard, hauled you-know-what down the quarter mile, and carved-up race courses relying on proven RAM clutch sets and flywheels to put the power to the pavement.

Let’s take a peek at the most popular RAM clutch sets for Fox body to S550 Mustangs.

HDX Clutch Sets
If you drive your Mustang mainly on the street and the engine does not exceed 450 horsepower, then a RAM HDX is the clutch you want. The HDX clutch set delivers exceptional drivability with precise driver control. RAM accomplishes this feat in two ways. First, they build the HDX pressure plates with 30% more clamp pressure over stock. The second trick is a twofer. RAM lines the disc with premium organic composite friction material and uses an exclusive eight-spring hub assembly. This combination provides smooth engagement and a high level of driver comfort in operation.

Powergrip Clutch Sets
As engine power levels increase up to the 550 horsepower range, it’s time to give RAM Powergrip clutch sets a look. The Powergrip’s disc features an organic/metallic friction material that retains the good engagement characteristics of a full organic disc yet provides a substantial increase in torque capacity. Urethane-encapsulated coil springs in the eight-spring hub are more effective in absorbing high shock loads than standard coil springs. The competition-style pressure plate provides over 30% more clamp pressure than stock and meets SFI specifications for track duty.

Concept 10.5 Dual-Disc Clutch Sets
The Concept 10.5 Dual clutch sets deliver the goods with a modular dual-disc design that fits nearly all OEM-type flat flywheels for better performance at an economical price.

The list of features for the Concept 10.5 Dual sets are nearly as long as your clutch leg:

  • 10.5 inch pressure plate features 2,400 pounds of clamp pressure to enhance heat dissipation and maintain stock pedal effort
  • Sprung hub top disc eases driveline stress during initial engagement
  • Available with 300 Series organic material discs for super-smooth engagement on street vehicles making up to 750 horsepower
  • Also available with 900 Series metallic discs for extreme duty/competition vehicles making more than 1,000 horsepower
  • Precision machined billet stands provide a stable mounting platform and properly center the clutch on the flywheel for better balancing and less vibration while driving
  • Strap driven floater plate system assures quiet, no-rattle operation
  • Floater plate/stand segment assemblies are preassembled with appropriate floater plate gaps, so the clutch always disengages properly
  • Fits most OEM-type flat steel and aluminum flywheels
  • All necessary mounting hardware to attach the clutch set to the flywheel is included
Force 10.5 Dual-Disc Clutch Sets
For Mustangs operating in the 400 to 1,200 horsepower range, RAM’s Force 10.5 Dual-Disc Clutch Sets are another great choice. Sharing many of the same great features of the Concept 10.5 Dual series, these street-friendly Force 10.5 sets include your choice of an SFI-certified billet steel or billet aluminum flywheel to ensure a proper balance and vibration-free operation. Another key difference: the three-strap system that locates the floater plate. With this system, the high clamp load pressure plate guarantees the necessary holding power required for high-horsepower vehicles without creating excessive pedal pressure. It also eliminates the floater ‘rattle’ that is common on stand driven clutch systems.

Here too, RAM lets you choose the type of clutch discs that you want to use. For the Force 10.5 Dual-Disc Sets, the 300 Series organic material discs provide super-smooth engagement on street vehicles making between 500 to 800 horsepower. If your Mustang spends most of its time at the track or makes between 600 to 1,200 horsepower, RAM says that the 900 Series metallic models will provide the best service life.

Pro Street Dual-Disc Clutch Sets
If you are looking for the perfect all-around clutch, this may just be it. Starting with a clean sheet of paper, RAM designed these Pro Street Dual-Disc Clutch Sets to deliver the best drivability and performance possible. The heart of this design is a new billet aluminum pressure plate that is optimized for easy pedal effort and maximum holding power. By manufacturing the plate in-house, RAM sets the static pressure, release length, and lever position for the best possible driving experience on the street or at the track. This means that the Pro Street clutch is easy to modulate and always delivers smooth engagement and takeoff, unlike competitors’ systems that feel like they have an on/off switch for a clutch pedal. Last, a special high-cone diaphragm enables easy high-RPM shifting.

For the flywheel, RAM specs the Pro Street sets with your choice of an SFI-certified billet steel or a billet aluminum model with a steel insert to draw heat away from the clutch to prevent distortion. On the discs, RAM gives you the same proven 300 Series and 900 Series disc options used in the Concept 10.5 and Force 10.5 clutch sets so that you can pick the perfect combination of streetability or durability that suits your needs and driving style.

Flywheels
One last thing. When going through the exhaustive R&R process of replacing a failed clutch, it’s always highly recommended that you ditch the OEM flywheel for a suitable high-performance alternative. RAM has you covered with billet steel flywheels that provide superior strength or lightweight billet aluminum flywheels for high-revving applications.
