Rebuild Your Tired Ford Triton Engine with 2CarPros 2005 Ford 5.4L 3V Parts Combos
When the Triton 5.4L 3V engine in his 2005 Ford F-150 Lariat started making the telltale clattery noise that signals a failing variable cam timing (VCT) system, Ryan Lavacot of 2CarPros had a choice to make—rebuild an engine with 184,000 miles on the clock or get another truck.
After recovering from a case of new truck sticker shock, Ryan decided to rebuild the Triton and give the F-150 a new lease on life. If you’re facing the same dilemma, rebuilding your 5.4L 3V engine isn’t any harder than building any other engine, and could save you money in the long run. Visit the 2CarPros YouTube channel to learn how and source the parts in our 2CarPros 2005 Ford 5.4L 3V Parts Combos.
Another great source on rebuilding 5.4L 3V engines is the FordTechMakuloco YouTube channel. The link will take you to 80 videos on diagnosing and repairing Triton engines.
Short Block
Ryan tore the 5.4L down to the bare block. The machine shop overbored the block .030 inch and balanced the rotating assembly. Ryan kept the stock crankshaft but decided to use Summit Racing™ Performance Connecting Rods instead of reconditioning the factory rods. The forged H-beam rods are rated to handle up to 900 horsepower. That’s definitely overkill for a stock rebuild, but they are so affordable Ryan couldn’t resist.
The rest of the rotating assembly consists of top-quality parts—Speed Pro hypereutectic pistons with coated skirts to reduce friction; a Hastings piston ring set with plasma-moly coated top rings; and Clevite H-Series rod and main bearings.
Like many modern engines, the 5.4L uses torque-to-yield fasteners that cannot be reused. Ryan replaced the stock torque-to-yield main cap bolts with stronger ARP main studs and side bolts.
Another Triton 5.4L 3V issue is the oil pump. The factory pump has trouble maintaining enough oil pressure and volume, which can starve the valvetrain and the VCT system of oil. Ryan installed a Melling high volume pump that delivers 20% more volume. The extra volume will help maintain the proper oil pressure. Ryan cleaned and reused the stock oil pump pickup tube, but the Melling pump in our combo includes a new pickup tube.
Rounding out the combo are a Fel-Pro engine gasket set and Melling brass freeze plugs.
Valvetrain
Considering the 5.4L’s high mileage, Ryan wisely decided to upgrade the valvetrain with new parts. He had the machine shop rebuild the cylinder heads with new valves and Melling stock replacement valve springs. The heads were secured to the block with Fel-Pro OEM-style torque-to-yield head bolts and Fel-Pro gaskets.
Ryan also installed new camshafts, lifters (aka lash adjusters), and rocker arms (aka cam followers). Our combo includes Melling OEM replacement parts, including camshafts for 2005-08 5.4L engines in F-150s. Other upgrades include an ARP cam tower stud kit and a pair of fancy blue-powdercoated Ford Performance Parts valve covers.
Ryan took no chances and replaced the Triton’s timing chain and VCT solenoids. Our combo includes Melling VCT solenoids and a Ford Performance Parts camshaft drive kit that comes with new timing chains and guides; camshaft phasers and bolts; tensioners; crankshaft gear; and timing cover seals.
We also included an OTC camshaft alignment tool set. It has a phaser holding tool and a chain lock tool to keep the parts in place while you torque the phasers to spec.
Accessory Drive
The front serpentine drive and engine accessories were almost as worn out as the engine itself. Our combo includes an ACDelco accessory drive kit that includes the pulleys, tensioner, and drive belt.
The water pump, power steering pump, and AC compressor were replaced with Motorcraft OEM replacements. Ryan also replaced the power steering pressure/return line assembly and the harmonic balancer. Our combo includes a Motorcraft power steering line assembly, a Powerbond balancer, and an ARP balancer bolt. The balancer features a nodular iron casting plus inserted and pressure-bonded rubber that are stronger than those used in other OEM replacement balancers.
Once the engine was in the truck, Ryan installed the new alternator, starter, and radiator. Our combo includes a brand-new ACDelco Gold starter and alternator plus a Denso OEM replacement radiator. And since we know your F-150’s motor mounts are trashed, we included a pair of DEA motor mounts.
Completer Parts
It’s always cheap insurance to replace engine sensors during a rebuild. Ryan did just that with new knock sensors, a cylinder head temperature sensor, and cam and crankshaft position sensors. Our combo includes Bosch knock sensors, a Standard Motor temperature sensor, and Motorcraft cam and crank sensors. Ryan also dropped in a new 190 degree Motorcraft thermostat.
It also makes no sense to reuse high-mileage fuel injectors and spark plugs on a rebuilt engine. Our combo includes new Motorcraft injectors and a set of Motorcraft Platinum spark plugs as specified by Ford for the 5.4L 3V.
Ryan cleaned up the factory exhaust manifolds and installed new studs and gaskets. Our combo includes Fel-Pro OE replacement studs and Mahle steel exhaust gaskets. Ryan recommends the Mahle gaskets as they have a multi-layer design and will last much longer than composite gaskets.
