Turn Your Early Fox Body into a Pro Touring Hero with Andrew Schenk Pro Touring Fox 1986 Mustang Parts Combos

Andrew Schenk has loved Fox Body Mustangs since he was a kid riding around in his dad’s 1985 GT. His mom wouldn’t let him have the car when it came time to sell it, but being the patient type, Andrew waited until he found the perfect Fox in 2015. For the princely sum of $5,000 he got a 1986 Mustang GT that was rust-free and other than a cold air intake, completely stock.

The car didn’t stay that way very long. Andrew leapfrogged about a dozen levels and built a Pro Touring hero complete with a 427 cubic inch, twin-supercharged 351W, air ride suspension, big brakes—the whole nine yards—while retaining the classic ‘four eye’ look.

You can see the build on Andrew’s Protourfox Instagram, and many of the parts used in our Andrew Schenk Pro Touring Fox 1986 Mustang Parts Combos. You can also check out the Mustang on Andrew’s My Garage page at SummitRacing.com (and create your own My Garage page while you're there!).

Short Block Parts Combo
The big Windsor is based on a World Products Man ‘O War cast iron block with 4.125-inch bores. Made with high-density iron, the block has four-bolt billet steel main caps, thicker main journal webbing for added strength, and 351 Cleveland-type main bearing journals to reduce friction.

The reciprocating assembly features a four-inch stroke Scat forged crankshaft that is designed specifically for use in aftermarket blocks with 351C bearing journals. The connecting rods are 6.2 inch long Eagle Specialties forged H-beams fitted with ARP cap screw fasteners. The pistons are custom Wiseco slugs forged from stronger 2618 aluminum that can better handle power adders like, say, twin superchargers. The pistons are fitted with Wiseco GFX Series rings.

The camshaft is a custom COMP Cams hydraulic roller that specs out at .595-inch lift and 247/263 degrees duration @.050-inch lift with a 114 degree LSA. It’s held in place with a Melling camshaft thrust plate and synced with the crankshaft with a Summit Racing™ Billet Steel Timing Set. An Allstar Performance aluminum timing cover seals things up.

Rounding out the combo is an Innovators West clutch pack/inertia ring harmonic balancer, ARP main studs, Clevite and Dura-Bond bearings, and a Fel-Pro rear main seal. The Innovators West balancer has free-floating wet friction clutch pack assemblies with spring-loaded inertia rings to dampen crankshaft harmonics over a much wider RPM range than balancers that use rubber/elastomeric inertia rings.

Valvetrain Parts Combo
The 427’s valvetrain starts with a set of Trick Flow High Port® 225 cylinder heads. The heads have CNC-ported 225cc intake/95cc exhaust runners, CNC-profiled 70cc combustion chambers with 2.080- and 1.600-inch valves, and 1.460-inch dual valve springs rated to .600-inch valve lift. The High Ports have unique valve spacing, .750-inch raised exhaust runners, extra strong castings, and thick decks that make them ideal for engines with high-boost turbos, superchargers, and nitrous oxide.

The High Ports are set up with valve springs for solid roller camshafts, so Andrew swapped them for a set of Trick Flow by Pac Racing 1.275-inch valve springs for hydraulic roller cams. The springs are rated for cams up to .675-inch valve lift.

The cylinder heads are fitted with 1.6 ratio Summit Racing™ Gold Series Roller Rocker Arms, 7.75 inch long Trick Flow chromoly pushrods, and Trick Flow retro-fit roller lifters.

The heads are sealed to the World Products Man ‘O War block with ARP Pro Series head studs and Fel-Pro MLS head gaskets. They’re topped with polished Summit Racing™ Die-Cast Aluminum Valve Covers that feature thick gasket rails for optimum sealing and crack resistance.

Exhaust and Oiling System Parts Combo
The 427’s oiling system is based on a seven-quart Moroso Road Race oil pan with a Melling high-volume oil pump. The fabricated steel pan has billet end seals for better sealing plus a four-trap door assembly and removable anti-slosh baffle for improved oil control. A Summit Racing™ Breather Tank helps vent excess crankcase pressure while keeping oil vapor out of the induction system.

The stainless steel exhaust system is custom-built with three-inch diameter tubing, Pypes M-80 mufflers, Pypes Mini catalytic converters, and Pypes direct-fit tailpipes. The mufflers and catalytic converters have compact designs for improved clearance—a big plus with a car that sits as low as Andrew’s Mustang. The converters also have built-in oxygen sensor bungs, saving you the hassle of drilling the header collectors to fit O2 sensors.

The BBK shorty-style headers are designed to fit a 351 Windsor in the Fox Body chassis. They have 1 5/8-inch primary tubes, 3/8-inch thick die-stamped flanges for excellent sealing, and a shiny silver ceramic coat finish. The headers are even emissions-legal in all 50 states.

Fuel and Ignition System Parts Combo
1986 was the first year that Mustangs came from the factory with fuel-injected V8s, but Andrew wanted to replicate the look of the carbureted five-liter cars. A Holley Sniper XFLOW throttle body EFI system solved the issue nicely. The system has four 120 lb.-hr. injectors and flows 900 CFM of air, enough to support up to 1,375 horsepower when using a power adder. The XFLOW’s ECU can control timing when used with magnetic pickup distributor, and can even support a wet or dry nitrous system.

The Sniper XFLOW system is bolted to an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold and topped with a custom air cleaner designed to look like the factory dual-snorkel cleaner found on carbureted Fox Bodies.

The fuel system features a Holley 525 LPH fuel pump module mounted in a custom-built aluminum fuel tank. The module flows enough fuel to support EFI engines making up to 1,200 horsepower can carbureted engines making up to 1,450 horsepower. Two 100-micron Summit Racing™ Inline Billet Fuel Filters keep the gasoline nice and clean. The Holley VR Series fuel pressure regulator is adjustable from 40 to 100 PSI and can handle enough fuel flow to support a whopping 3,000 horsepower.

The ignition system features a Holley Sniper Hyperspark distributor, CD ignition box, and coil that are designed to work with the Sniper EFI system. The distributor has a billet aluminum housing and a Hall Effect crank trigger sensor that provides a noise-free RPM signal to the Sniper ECU. The ignition box can supply 135mJ of spark energy when used with the 43,000-volt HyperSpark coil and is virtually plug-and-play with the XFLOW EFI system.

A set of ACCEL Extreme 9000 ignition wires and NGK Racing spark plugs complete the system. The 8mm wires have ceramic spark plug boots that won’t burn up if they make contact with the headers.

Engine Accessory System Parts Combo
This combo includes a Proform Slim-Fit radiator and electric fan system to keep the 427 nice and cool. It integrates the radiator, fan, thermostat, and shroud into a unit that is less than four inches thick. The radiator has two rows of one-inch tubes plus full core-width extruded tubes, and the 16-inch electric fan pulls up to 2,100 CFM through the core. An ACDelco stock replacement water pump keeps the coolant circulating and a Proform overflow tank keeps it off the pavement.

A large cubic, twin-supercharged engine can be tough on oil. Andrew plumbed in a Summit Racing™ Plate and Fin Fluid Cooler and an eight-inch Summit Racing™ Electric Fan to keep the engine oil cool and prevent early thermal breakdown that can lead to engine damage.

Rounding out the combo are a Summit Racing™ Protorque Starter and a Sanden-style Summit Racing™ Air Conditioning Compressor. The Protorque starter has a 1.9 horsepower motor and a 4.0:1 gear-reduction ratio to generate 222 ft.-lbs. of cranking power. That’s enough to turn over engines with up to an 18:1 compression ratio.

Drivetrain and Brakes Parts Combo
Andrew elected to go the manual transmission route with a Tremec T-56 six-speed and a Centerforce DYAD DS twin-disc clutch kit. The T-56 can handle up to 700 lbs.-ft. of torque and offers incredibly short, extremely low-effort shift throws with crisp, precise engagement. The DYAD DS clutch kit uses a pair of discs with organic/carbon composite facings driven from a single damped hub, ensuring that both discs are fully damped. This results in better drivability and improved noise reduction. Centerforce even includes a billet steel flywheel.

Fitting the big T-56 in the Mustang was made a lot easier with an American Powertrain Pro Fit installation kit. custom aluminum driveshaft with solid U-joints, driveshaft slip yoke; a polyurethane transmission mount; a White Lightning shifter; roller pilot bearing; and a speedometer conversion.

The Mustang’s clutch cable mechanism was replaced with an American Powertrain Hydramax hydraulic clutch release system. It comes with a new pedal assembly with slave cylinder, a hydraulic throwout bearing, and a remote fluid reservoir.

The T-56 transfers engine torque to a custom Ford 9-inch rear axle assembly with 35-spline axles, an Eaton Detroit Truetrac differential, and 3.70 gears. Our combo includes a Motive Gear 3.70 ratio ring and pinion gear set.

A Mustang with a twin-turbo small block needs a lot of stopping power. Andrew went with 14-inch Wilwood AERO6 front disc brakes with six-piston calipers and AERO4 rear discs with four-piston calipers. The brake kits also include cross-drilled and slotted rotors, BP-20 high performance street/track pads, and machined hats. Our combo also includes a Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve and Wilwood Flexline braided stainless steel brake line.

Chassis Parts Combo
Fox Body Mustangs are a bit of a flexi-flyer from the factory. Andrew fixed that issue with Stifflers Suspension subframe connectors, side rails, and web braces. These components tie the front and rear subframes with the rocker panels to form a triangulated ‘web’ that stiffen the chassis for better handling. Even better, there are no floors to cut, interior to remove, or lines to relocate. Andrew also used a Stifflers tubular transmission crossmember to gain some extra clearance to tuck up the exhaust system.

The front suspension consists of a Ridetech Handling Package with a pair of HQ Series Shockwave air shocks and a 1 3/8-inch diameter Belltech Muscle Bar solid sway bar. The Handling Package replaces the stock Mcpherson strut design with billet aluminum upper control arms, tubular lower arms, and spindles to greatly improve handling by optimizing caster, roll center, and bump steer. It also improves negative camber gain to position the tire perpendicular to the pavement.

The HQ Series Shockwaves are designed specifically for use with the Handling Package. They feature aluminum impact-forged construction for leak-free operation, and a monotube design with progressive valving for superior oil control, ride quality, and handling.

The rear suspension is a custom triangulated four-link setup with Ridetech HQ 7000 Shockwave air shocks. The monotube shocks have a softer spring rate that works best on the rear of most vehicles with a solid rear axle. You can set rebound to one of 24 settings using the click adjuster on the shock body.

Andrew can tune the suspension for handling and ride height with a RideTech RidePro E5 AirPod controller kit. Every time he turns the ignition key, the RidePro E5 self-adjusts to ride height and compensates for changes in load. Adjusting vehicle height is as simple as choosing one of three preset levels using the included touchscreen or wirelessly with a smartphone and the RidePro E5 app.

The Mustang rides on Continental ExtremeContact Sport 02 tires mounted on custom American Racing wheels. The tires are rated to 186 MPH and are built with Continental’s SportPlus Technology to provide superior dry and wet handling, excellent dry and wet braking, and extended tread life.

Completer Parts Combo
Andrew kept the classic Fox Body interior intact and added some subtle upgrades. The front seats are from a 1985 Mustang SVO reupholstered with TMI seat foam and charcoal color Hi-Performance covers. The covers features vinyl backs and sides with a diamond-perforated leather seating surfaces that match the factory upholstery. He also replaced the door panels with TMI reproduction Mustang SVO panels.

The factory gauges were replaced with a New Vintage USA gauge cluster with CFR Series gauges. The cluster comes with a programmable speedometer and tach plus fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltmeter gauges. It also has built-in turn signal indicators and lights for high-beams, brakes, warning indicator, and auxiliary input. The gauges have carbon fiber faces with red pointers. Andrew also added a New Vintage USA CFR Series boost gauge to keep an eye on the twin superchargers.

Fox Body Mustangs were not blessed with large amounts of sound deadening from the factory. Andrew rectified this issue with plenty of Dynamat Xtreme, Dynamat Dynapad, and Dynamat Dynaliner sound deadener all over the interior.

The Mustang was rewired using a Ron Francis EXPRESS wiring harness. The harness is specific to 1986 model Mustangs and comes with a fully assembled 18-circuit fuse panel with the necessary fuses, relays, and flasher units.

Rounding out the combo are an Odyssey dry cell battery, a Scott Drake reproduction dash pad, and an Oracle Colorshift underbody LED light kit just for grins.
