Upgrade Your 3rd Gen Camaro’s Steering with a Flaming River Rack and Pinion Cradle Kit

GM “blessed” the 1982-92 Camaro with a recirculating-ball steering system. Over time, that system with all its linkages and wear points loosens up. And that leads to a vague, sloppy steering feel.

You can rebuild your Camaro’s steering system with aftermarket upgrades and it will feel pretty good. But if you want the steering responsiveness and feel of a modern muscle car, converting to a rack and pinion system is the way to go.

A Flaming River Rack and Pinion Cradle Kit makes that conversion a bolt-on swap. The kit features a complete power rack and pinion steering setup mounted in a steel cradle. This replaces the Camaro’s factory steering box and drag link using their original mounting points—no suspension modifications required. The assembly has a stronger one-inch diameter rack gear and provides more than six inches of travel and full turning radius to maintain factory-level maneuverability.

Mounted to the front of the cradle is a travel bar with Flaming River-designed inner tie rods. These connect to the factory outer tie rod ends and adjusting sleeves to maintain the pivot geometry and turning radius of the old drag link. That means handling is unaffected.

Summit Racing also carries Flaming River’s new Tilt Floor Shift Steering Column. The two-inch diameter column is a direct replacement for the factory column and has controls for the turn signals, hazard switch, and tilt function. Flaming River also added a windshield wiper control with delay and a micro dimmer switch to control the headlights’ high/low beam setting.
