XForce Varex Muffler Smart Box Controller Now Available at Summit Racing
Everything is smart these days. Phones. Cars. Home security systems. And now, mufflers that can automatically adjust their sound quality to your liking.
Sound impossible? Not if you have an exhaust system with an XForce Varex Muffler (or two). The new Varex Smart Box Controller can automatically adjust muffler sound quality and level based on parameters you set.
What’s a Varex Muffler, Anyway?
If you don’t run XForce Varex mufflers, let us explain why you might want to consider a swap. Made from polished 304 stainless steel, they feature a butterfly valve mechanism driven by an electric motor and controlled via a key fob. The valve redirects exhaust gas flow based on a driver-selected sound level. For a mellow sound, exhaust gas goes through the muffler’s chambered system (similar to a factory high performance muffler). When you want to go nuclear, the exhaust gas goes through the center tube, much like a straight-through muffler. Since the angle of the butterfly valve is infinitely adjustable, you can set the sound at any level between the two points.
Mufflers with a Brain
Adding a Varex Smart Box to your exhaust system is like giving the mufflers a brain. The Smart Box replaces the module and key fob that come with a Varex muffler, providing both automatic and manual control over the sound level. You set the sound parameters with your smartphone using the free Smart Box app.
The automatic level control is called Matrix Mode. Muffler sound level values are based on engine RPM, throttle position, and vehicle speed. You select the sound level range—XForce calls them bands—on the app. When your vehicle reaches the range of a preset band, the Smart Box automatically selects that band and adjusts the Varex muffler(s) accordingly. It sounds complicated, but the easy-to-use interface will guide you through the process.
The Band Snap function is another option to select an automatic sound level. You’ll need a buddy to ride along with you to use it; as you’re driving and you hear the exhaust sound level you want, have your friend tap the Band Snap button on the app. The Smart Box will automatically assign a band value to that sound level. You can fine-tune a band to get just the right sound.
Want to stay quiet in town, then go louder when you hit the highway? The Smart Box also has a Geo Mode that lets you assign a sound level based on geographic region. Pick a region or regions on a map in the app and apply the level/band you want. When you drive through those areas, the Smart Box automatically applies the assigned band. Multiple regions can be set and memorized by the app.
Human Control
The Smart Box has a manual mode that lets you set sound level by setting the muffler’s butterfly valve. You can set the valve in one of five pre-set positions—closed, 25% open, 50% open, 75% open, and full open—or you can create your own position settings and save them to the app.
The XForce Smart Box Controller can be retrofitted to any Varex muffler. The kit includes a remote control kit for use with dual exhaust systems, a GPS antenna, and a cable to connect the Smart Box to your vehicle’s OBD II port.
