Hoonigans Creations: Scumbug and ShartKart

If there is one thing the unsettled minds over at Hoonigans are good at, it's having fun turning junk into forward motion. It's the only reason things like Scumbug and ShartKart exist.

Our blog friends over at OnAllCylinders brought these, er, vehicles to our attention. We'll give you the Readers Digest version of the projects here, but you should check out the stories at OAC for more information and links to the Hoonigans videos. They make a wonderful rabbit hole to jump into.

ScumBug 1973 VW
In 2017, Hoonigans paid $2,500 for a wreck of a '73 Baja Bug. They then proceeded to do the least amount of repairs and updates possible the day before driving the car to Mexico to run part of the Baja 1000. Hilarious.

Hoonigans then took ScumBug to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where as we speak they are tearing the car completely apart and rebuilding it--we assume properly this time. Stay tuned to OnAllCylinders for updates on this adventure.

ShartKart Mazda Miata
What do you do with a $200 Miata? If you're Hoonigans, you build a Death Kart. Armed with a Sawzall and the slimmest of plans, the crew tore the little Mazda down to its barest bones. They added a roll cage, sidebars, some chassis stiffening, and front and rear bash bars (Hoonigans aren't entirely nuts).

ShartKart also got some suspension upgrades, a real race seat and harness, and a hydro handbrake for rear-only braking. ShartKart is also at SEMA where Hoonigans will be beating the you-know-what out of it at their outdoor exhibit.
