Jimmy Alund Puts Another Championship in the Bag
Summit Racing-sponsored Jimmy Ålund secured his 11th FIA European Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Championship most appropriately at the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals at Tierp, Sweden this past August.
Ålund qualified Number One and also set an FIA Pro Stock ET record in the last round of qualifying with a 6.4857/214.13 pass. That run also set quickest ET and top speed for the event.
"Finally! We've been chasing that record for way too long but we have it again,” Ålund said. “We’re very happy about the strong speeds we managed running over 211 MPH in four of the five qualifying rounds."
The team did their job on the Sunday as well and gave Ålund a good race car. He kept up the pace with two wins, but an engine issue in the final run stopped Ålund from winning the event. No matter—the points he earned made him the 2019 FIA Pro Stock champion for the 11th time.
"This is another great weekend to remember—the team put a perfect car on the track and we won another championship,” Ålund said. “It was of course fitting to win the championship with the Summit Racing Camaro at this Summit Racing Equipment-sponsored event".
In Pro Mod, Ålund did not get off to a good start with the Magnus Petersson-owned Old 51 Chevrolet. Transmission problems and tire shake had Ålund as the Number 18 qualifier after the first qualifying day. Things shaped up nicely on day two, with Ålund making three good runs to move up to third place going into Sunday's eliminations.
It was not a good day in eliminations, however. Ålund had tire shake right at the hit during Round One, ending his day.
"This was rough," Ålund said. "The wheel speed didn't come up and the rest is history. Turned out we had an issue with the blower that had us down on power at the launch."
Ålund came to the Summit Racing Equipment Internationals in second place in the FIA Pro Mod Championship and leaves in third place.
"Third might sound OK but this is a hardcore crowd to play with, and it'll be a challenge to catch Michael Gullqvist who is currently in the points lead," Ålund explained.
The final race is the FIA/FIM European Finals at Santa Pod in the UK. The action starts September 7 with qualifying for Pro Mod and Pro Stock.
