Larry Swim and Team BIGFOOT are the 2018 Toughest Monster Truck Tour Champions

We’re happy to announce that Summit Racing-sponsored BIGFOOT monster truck racer Larry Swim has won the 2018 Toughest Monster Truck Tour Championship. Yay Larry!

“The race for the championship gets tighter every year,” said Kelly and Dave Goldman, the owners/promoters of the Toughest Monster Truck Tour. “Larry Swim showed impressive grace under pressure on the road to the 2018 Championship – when times got tough, he stayed the course and focused on what he needed to do to win. That’s why he is a true champion.”

The Toughest Monster Truck Tour runs 26 events in 12 cities from January through April. Despite stumbling at the season-opening event in Rio Rancho, New Mexico—and at one point was stuck 40 points behind arch-rival Aaron Cain and Quad Chaos—Team BIGFOOT doubled down. Week in and week out, Larry and the Summit Racing Equipment BIGFOOT racked up the victories, winning 16 out of 22 races leading up to the final event.

It was a back and forth battle for the points lead between Team BIGFOOT and Quad Chaos going into the season-ending event in Grand Forks, North Dakota, with Larry holding a mere six- point lead over his rival. It was a nail-biter from start to finish. Larry tied the Quad Chaos team in the wheelie contest, and then pulled ahead when he qualified Number One in the race portion. But the cost was high—a broken front sway bar mount.

It’s almost impossible to control a monster truck along the race course without a front bar, but there was no time to fix the mount before eliminations. Larry lost in Round One, but fate intervened as the Quad Chaos team was taken out in Round Two, allowing Team BIGFOOT to go into the freestyle event with a three-point lead.

Still without a front sway bar, Larry had an almost flawless freestyle performance. And even with Quad Chaos winning freestyle by one point, it was Team BIGFOOT taking home the championship. The margin? Two skinny little points out of a possible 1,100.

“It was a rough season, but we pulled it off,” Larry said. “It was so close that it came down to the very end. They say never give up, and we didn’t!”
