Wilkerson Qualifies Third at NHRA SpringNationals
Tim Wilkerson, driver of the Levi, Ray and Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang Nitro Funny Car qualified third at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.
In Round One of eliminations, Wilkerson faced Blake Alexander, whose Pronto Auto Parts Ford Mustang is tuned by Daniel Wilkerson. The matching surnames are no coincidence—Daniel is Wilk’s son.
“It doesn’t make a difference who’s in the other lane, though,” said Wilkerson. “I’m just going to race the track.”
However, Wilkerson experienced tire shake and the parachutes came out. Alexander got the win with a 3.959 second/298.34 MPH pass to Wilkerson’s 6.727/83.56.
“I don’t know what happened, but nothing worked right,” said Wilkerson. “The tires shook and the parachute fell out. No doubt about it, we’ve got a good car that’s really fast. I just have to concentrate on keeping it fast.”
Wilkerson is currently seventh in the Funny Car points standings.
