Overview

The OptiBeam OB2‑40 2 Element 40 meter Yagi is a compact, high‑performance monoband directional antenna for the 7 MHz amateur band. Designed with computer modeling and extensive field testing, it delivers impressive performance in a limited space. It provides 3.6 dBd gain (10.8 dBi gain at 65 ft. above ground) and a 15 dB front‑to‑back ratio, comparable to larger full‑size Yagis.

The foundation of the very sturdy OB2‑40 antenna is a robust 3.15 × 3.15 in (80 × 80 mm) by 18.4 ft (5.6 m) aluminum boom. Its two guyed elements have a maximum length of 49.2 ft (15 m) and a manageable 26.1 ft (7.96 m) turning radius. The OB2-40 weighs 77 lbs. (35 kg) with a wind area of 6.7 sq ft (0.62 sq. m) and wind load at 81 mph (130 km/h) of 112 lb.-f (500 N).

The shortened 40‑meter elements of the OB2‑40 employ high‑Q low‑loss loading coils (not traps), ensuring efficiency and performance. The 30-ohm feedpoint impedance is matched to a 50-ohm feedline with a factory‑installed hairpin match. A high‑quality 1:1 balun rated for up to 5 kW is included. To minimize interaction with nearby 20–10 m antennas, special decoupling stubs made from 0.08 in (2 mm) V2A stainless wire are mounted beneath the outer half of the elements, tensioned with plastic insulators.

Two OB2‑40 assembly options allow frequency optimization for different band segments:

  • CW-Digital-Low Phone: Best performance from 7.000–7.200 MHz; may be used with reduced performance 7.200–7.300 MHz with a tuner for the top of the band.

  • USA Phone: Optimized for 7.150–7.300 MHz, ideal for North American and DX SSB. SWR is not suitable for use of a tuner for the CW and Digital part of the band.

Typical SWR values range from 1.1 to 1.6; up to 1.9 at the band edges.

The OptiBeam OB2‑40 2 Element 40 Meter Yagi is an excellent choice for operators seeking a powerful 40‑meter directional antenna for a limited space, featuring a design of rugged reliability with practical frequency-range installation flexibility.

OptiBeam antenna technology has achieved directional antennas with extraordinary electrical properties, including the highest efficiency, optimum band coverage, nearly constant gain and unchanging radiation pattern across the band, and low SWR. These antennas maintain consistent electrical characteristics under all weather-conditions and include a high power balun with UHF female connector for your 50 Ohm coaxial cable. OptiBeam Antennas are distinguished by their advanced mechanical qualities. Specially configured, stable and properly shaped element holders, robust square and round booms with effective and very solidly-built element transitions are OptiBeam exclusives. They provide advanced physical properties, including proper balance and the highest stability of the entire system. Elements are perfectly aligned and secured against torsion with minimal sag for a visually pleasing appearance.

OptiBeam antennas are made for those who understand the true value of investing in proven electrical performance and unequalled mechanical quality for the ultimate in reliability. They are built to withstand the harshest conditions using the very best materials, including high quality aluminum alloys, UV stable synthetic parts and stainless steel hardware. OptiBeam antennas are designed to be easier to build than others, arriving in subassemblies with every part carefully sorted, clearly labeled, and extremely well packed for worry-free shipment and straightforward installation.

In 2025, the OptiBeam brand of products was exclusively acquired by WiMo Antennen und Elektronik GmbH. The OptiBeam portfolio is now produced by WiMo and integrated into its product offering. With this acquisition, WiMo will integrate the technical expertise and know-how gained from OptiBeam's many years of experience in antenna technology and will provide new impetus with its extensive service and sales network. The primary goal is to successfully continue OptiBeam's antennas, ensure long-term customer service and spare parts availability, and leverage development potential.

For enthusiastic operators of all pursuits, OptiBeam provides the advantage of pure performance. Proven in the field and confirmed by the most demanding hams around the world – choose OptiBeam for your station.
