Overview
EAntenna HEX6B Six Band Hexbeam Antenna
EAntenna HEX6B Six Band Hexbeam is a directional HF antenna for the six Amateur bands 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6 meters. This design follows the ideas of Steve Hunt, G3TXQ, the originator of the Broadband version of the Hex Beam antenna. Refined by EAntenna the mechanical construction of this version uses their long-standing antenna engineering experience. The result is an efficient, lightweight portable antenna for the high HF DX bands which assembles quickly, making it ideal for DXpeditions and vacations. Installation at 20 ft. above the ground works quite well. A tower-mounted Hexbeam at a height of 35 to 60 ft. achieves maximum performance for excellent DX results.
The HEX6B works as two element beam on each band. Ready-to-use wires and ropes are fixed to the fiberglass struts, so no tuning is required! Due to the mechanical tension of the struts, the beam is stretched to its fixed size all the time, so there is no sag on the wires. The radiator dipoles are connected to the vertical center support, with each band wire element attaching with screw clamps. The center support is designed as a coaxial transformer and balun, providing a particularly good match on each band, with one feedline for all six bands. The HEX6B forward gain is approximately 3dBD or better, the front/back ratio is between 13 and 22dB. SWR is 1.5:1 or better on all bands except 10m, where SWR is 2:1 or better. Each band can be used in full bandwidth without a tuner. The maximum allowed power is 5 kW. The fiberglass tubes are double coated against UV radiation.
The setup of the HEX6B six band beam is simple and can be done by one person in about 30 minutes. Installation begins by assembling the 6 fiberglass struts to the center pole. Ready-cut ropes from the top of the center pole to each strut are installed for the typical upside-down umbrella shape of the hex beam. Then the ready-cut wires are attached to the struts and electrically connected to the center pole. All ropes and wires are already cut to length, so no tuning is required. Due to the low weight of only 18.7 lbs. (8.2 kg) this hex beam can be installed on a light aluminum push-up mast. Rotation is either done with a small rotator or by hand. The HEX6B mast clamp accommodates support poles with a 1.10 -2.05 in. (28-52mm) diameter.
